APS6 Scientific Efficacy Evaluator

Do you have a strong scientific background, excellent critical thinking skills and an appetite for solving problems? Do you thrive on acquiring new scientific knowledge and collaborating with others? An exciting opportunity is available for you to acquire new skills and experience in medicines regulation and working with the law as part of a scientific evaluation team within the Complementary and OTC Medicines Branch (COMB) at the TGA.

COMB is responsible for the regulation of over-the-counter self-selected medicines, which include complementary medicines—traditional and herbal medicines, and vitamin and mineral supplements—that are supplied in Australia. A vacancy is available in the Complementary Medicines Evaluation Section (CMES) in this Branch. CMES conducts pre-market evaluations of medicines and their ingredients for safety, quality and efficacy.

The successful applicant will conduct pre-market evaluations of the efficacy of registered complementary medicines and assessed listed medicines, in line with legislative requirements and support decision making about approving these medicines for supply to the Australian public. This role provides an opportunity to gain experience in regulatory evaluation and showcase your aptitude for independent critical analysis.

This role provides an opportunity to have a direct impact on the community and ensure that these self-selected medicines are efficacious. It will suit individuals who thrive in a busy work environment, embrace the challenge of making complex decisions, and have exemplary communication and time management skills as these evaluations must be completed within legislative timeframes. The timely completion of high quality evaluations that balance risk requires that our Evaluators have considerable scientific capability and attention to detail. Our Evaluators must therefore have initiative in developing their knowledge and skills with a high degree of autonomy, and a commitment to achieving results through team work. The spectrum of duties—spanning scientific evaluation, stakeholder liaison, regulatory decision-making and business improvement—make the work of Evaluators in COMB varied and engaging.
