The role

We have a clear mission to grow our Australian business focussing on utility-scale onshore wind, solar and storage. To support this, we are recruiting for an ambitious and inspiring Head of Development to lead prospecting and development. You will establishment a high quality sustainable portfolio of utility scale wind, solar and storage developments.

Location for this role is flexible. However you will need to spend time collaborating with our teams in Tasmania, Victoria, NSW and QLD.

This senior role reports to the Managing Director and manages the Development team. You will drive innovation and excellence in development including:

  • Leading the identification, assessment and development of a continuous portfolio of utility scale renewable generation and storage projects for handover to the Commercial and Construction team
  • Business case preparation for consideration by the MDs and board
  • Management of the Development team to deliver high performance outcomes.
  • Delivery of a portfolio of tightly controlled, successful development opportunities to achieve the company’s growth strategy and maximise shareholder value
  • Managing the negotiation of landowner agreements to ensure land access within an acceptable commercial framework
  • Working with communities and stakeholders to ensure engagement and support of development opportunities, lobbying to drive change to support BayWa’s growth
  • Ensuring project approvals reflect optimal design and flexibility such that shareholder value is maximised
  • Working seamlessly with the Communications, Engineering, Grid, Commercial and Construction and Finance teams to deliver successful opportunities that meet their projected performance on time and to budget.
  • Establishing robust development and risk management frameworks for projects. Ensuring appropriate risk management tools and reporting systems are implemented and project risks are identified, analysed and appropriately managed
  • Ensuring internal stakeholders understand project risks and are kept informed through use of effective ‘early warning’ and exception reporting systems
  • Leading or supporting BayWa’s hydrogen and ammonia strategy
  • Adhering to company policies with a strong focus on the environment, and health and safety.

  • Our ideal candidate will

  • Be a commercially astute problem solver with a passion for renewable energy
  • Be an experienced manager of high performance teams who naturally uses a coaching leadership style. You will lead with enthusiasm, compassion, and be a lifelong learner with a desire to share your knowledge
  • Have a passion for creating positive change and working with communities and stakeholders to achieve this
  • Have a minimum 10 years’ current Australian experience successfully managing prospecting and development of portfolios of utility scale wind and solar farms.
  • Have a deep, broad, and current understanding of the Australian energy market
  • Be experienced undertaking financial assessment, feasibility and due diligence of development opportunities and making recommendations for investment
  • Min honours degree in Engineering, Law, Environmental Science or similar
  • Be willing to travel and capable of spending time walking and off-road driving on site
