We currently have an exceptional opportunity for a Biobank Coordinator in a full-time capacity to join our Respiratory Research Unit reporting to Ms Megan Martin. The Biobank Coordinator will assist with managing the day-to-day activities of our biobank and appropriate laboratory techniques. You will also actively engage with clinicians to increase the activities of the biobank in line with the business model. You will be performing tasks such as biospecimen collection, sample processing, patient recruitment and data entry to support the research team. This is a great opportunity for someone with phlebotomy skills who is looking to enter research or change careers as there will be full on-the-job training provided.

The Biobank Coordinator’s Role Encompasses The Following Duties

  • Operationally manage the activities of the Biobank
  • Actively engage with clinicians to increase the activities of the Bio Bank in line with the business model
  • Collect respiratory biological samples and process them as required
  • Ensure all activities managed by the Bio Bank are carried out in accordance with Good Clinical Practice (GCP), Good Laboratory Practice (GLP), Therapeutic Good Administration (TGA) guidelines and the Human Transplant and Anatomy Act 1979
  • Liaise with and facilitate collaboration between Mater Research, relevant hospital departments, surgeries and pathology companies to maximise the effectiveness and efficiency of tissue collection
  • Collect bio-specimens from theatre and/or pathology laboratories
  • Collection and processing of tissue and blood according to biobank SOPs
  • Implement and maintain a specimen database for the efficient, storage, logging and retrieval of tissue specimens, clinical data, images, pathology samples and storage information
  • Process tissue, create image scans and slides and store in refrigerated storage vessels and enter sample and related information in the database
  • Review and update as appropriate consenting agreements for the collection of tissue samples
  • Communicate relevant information between ethics committees, donors, researchers, surgeons and other stakeholders as required.

The qualifications and attributes that will facilitate your success in this role are:
  • Relevant tertiary qualifications and work experience; or an equivalent combination of relevant experience and/or education/training
  • Phlebotomy/pathology collector skills for tissue and blood handling
  • Have a thorough knowledge of tissue collection protocols and procedures and provide supervision to ensure all collections meet timelines and quality requirements
  • High level of organisation skills and database management is essential
  • Specimen collection and wet laboratory processing experience
  • Experience with sample processing, patient recruitment, managing clinical trial visits and data entry to support the research team as needed
