Job Description


ITEC Youth’s Residential Care Services offer accommodation and support to children (aged 0 to 18 years) who are referred through the Queensland Child Protection System.
Residential Care is intensive and time limited care that responds to the complex impact of abuse, neglect and separation from family. Outcomes are achieved through the creation of safe, healing relationships and experiences informed by a sound understanding of trauma, attachment and child development theories.
The primary goal of Residential Care is to improve the emotional and behavioural functioning of a child sufficient for them to successfully transition to either family-based care or independent living.
ITEC Health’s supported independent living services offer accommodation and support to people with disabilities.

Primary Responsibilities and KPI's

The Therapeutic Specialist works under the leadership of the Regional Manager to achieve program objectives by:
• Following ITEC Youth’s Healing House practice in providing and using our new trauma informed parenting model
• Write behaviour Support Plans
• Engage with youth and people with disabilities to provide appropriate supports
• Providing advice to staff on best way to implement behaviour supports in our Youth and Disability teams
• Working with the Therapeutic Managers, assessing the specific needs of each child and developing plans and programs to address these needs
• Work with staff to provide best tools and techniques to provide best outcomes for our children and people with disabilities
• Engaging the families of children where appropriate
• Ensuring the rights and interests of children are protected at all times and
• Advocating on behalf of the programs
• Work with behaviour and other therapeutic specialists to achieve outcomes

Provide a quality psychological / Social Worker intervention service
• Ensure sessions are provided in line with any professional or ITEC Group Code of Ethics and Conduct.
• At the first session, you are required to inform the child of the limitations of confidentiality and our obligations under the Child Protection and Privacy Act. Being a mandated person, you must adhere to any policy or legislation regarding this.
• Use your professional judgement regarding liaison and feedback with parents.
• Be prepared for all sessions, including resources required.

Direct Service Delivery
• Ensure a high standard of care consistent with the National Standards for Out of Home Care is provided to children placed within the program
• Ensure the care environment within the residential home complies with program standards, fire safety standards and workplace health and safety requirements
• Liaise with Managers in assessment and planning activities within the case management cycle for each child and ensure each child has a current Individualised Plan (My Footprint) and where relevant Day Program and Positive Behaviour Support Plan that is actively being implemented by staff
• Represent the program and ITEC Youth and ITEC Health in internal and external meetings and forums
• Support Managers to ensure a safe care environment in which the specific developmental, learning and therapeutic needs of each child are met

• Ensure reporting and record keeping standards are met
• Ensure all practices within the program are in accordance with the relevant ITEC Youth policies and guidelines
• Maintain client records per program policy and within policy timeframes

Program Development
• Participate in relevant regional and state-wide forums relating to the program area and contribute to policy development
• In conjunction with other Managers, monitor trends, service gaps and emerging program needs and proactively advocate for the program

Human Resource Management
• Provide debriefing for staff as required (Employee Assistance Program)

• Comply with all reasonable requests and instructions of the Manager 

Desired Skills and Experience

• Demonstrated high level skills associated with case management
• The capacity to develop positive relationships with children, their family where appropriate and their networks to achieve outcomes in the best interest of the child
• Excellent written and oral communication skills including public speaking, presentations and facilitation skills
• Demonstrated understanding of behaviour support and implementation of plans
• A tertiary qualification in Psychology, Social Work
• General Registration with APHRA as a psychologist - Desired
• Must hold or be willing to obtain a working with children check (Blue Card) prior to commencing duties
• Must be able to pass an annual criminal history check
• Must report any criminal charges or court appearances throughout the duration of employment
• Must hold a current QLD Open Drivers Licence
• Must hold or be willing to obtain a certificate in First Aid
• Must be willing to work flexible hours as determined by the demands of the position
