The role with us
The Technical Expert’s role is to provide level 3 operational support for a significant Government and Enterprise customer network – including activations, pro-active management and fault resolution.

What you'll work on
This role will also include a focus on Complex Fault Investigation, Project participation and operational improvement. Additionally, this role will provide technical leadership for Telstra’s customers, stakeholders and engineering; undertake day to day operational tasks, network audits, network activity reviews and proactive maintenance tasks

Key responsibilities

  • Perform or participate in complex, specialised technical investigations to determine/confirm system and design standards and performance parameters for the networks, infrastructure, products and services supplied and operated by Telstra
  • Provide complex technical advice, support, recommendations and customer consultancy on a range of platforms, devices, applications and computerised systems.
  • Diagnose and restore complex issues with the networks, infrastructure, products and services supplied and operated by Telstra
  • Provide input into and maintain technical documentation.
  • Diagnose and restore complex issues associated to customer’s applications, and private networks for Telstra’s Enterprise and Government customers.
  • Provide effective systems and application administration/management for relevant platforms and environments used.
  • Provide support to other teams within the customer facing environment.
  • Deliver and/or develop technical training, updates & or briefings to all Networking Tasmania staff and clients to ensure understanding of products, process & procedures.
  • Prepare, contribute and maintain process and technical documentation to describe how application infrastructure, products and services operate.
  • Provide pro-active Change Management with customers to ensure that customer impact of service changes and planned outages are minimised
  • Analyse technologies and develop technology strategy and implementation plans relevant to managed environment.
  • Developing tools and processes to support internal/external systems
  • Leverage scripting and programming to build required automation, tools and reports on an ad-hoc basis.
  • Train users and answer application system related questions.
  • Explore new technologies.
  • Operate within security and privacy guidelines.
  • Manage system and host backup/restore activities
  • Participate in on-call roster.

About you
To be successful in the role, you'll bring skills and experience in:-


  • Bachelor’s degree in Information Technologies or equivalent.
  • Strong experience in the telecommunication industry, including experience working in a service provider or large enterprise environment.
  • Experience with programming and scripting tools (including Perl, PHP, Python, Shell) that is relevant to current environments for automation, investigative and reports activities.
  • Seasoned professional in providing level 3 support dealing with customers and complex applications and product issues.
  • Linux support and systems administration experience.
  • Understanding of protocols/technologies like HTTP, SSL, LDAP, SQL, HTML, XML, and DNS.
  • Clear written and verbal communication skills.

Highly desirable

  • Experience performing system and custom application administration functions.
  • Experience securing network, platform and applications.
  • Experience with development and support of a variety of tool sets used in Networking Tasmania.
  • Experienced with Server hypervisors (i.e. VMware ESXi), Content and Mail filtering, load balancing environments.
  • Windows and other (non-Unix) support and systems administration experience.
  • Knowledge of access technologies (ADSL, BDSL, 4G, NBN, Ethernet and Fibre Services).
  • Experience with Cisco enterprise routers & switches.
  • Experience with Network Management Systems (SSH, SNMP, AAA, SysLog).
  • Routing, Wireless, Firewall and Switching experience.
  • ITILv3 certified
