Job Description

Zendesk’s people have one goal in mind - to make customer experience better. Our products help more than 150,000 global brands (like Airbnb, Uber, JetBrains and Slack) make their billions of customers happy every day. Our engineering team in Australia works at an enormous scale where the challenges start to get seriously interesting. Our global engineering team is one of the most widely dispersed in the world, with people across nearly every continent. This means you will get a chance to do cool things with a diverse bunch of people while working in an office that is home to some of Zendesk’s most loved products.

We are looking for an Engineering Team Lead who is in the early stages of their people management career to lead and grow our App Marketplace team based in the Melbourne office, part of our Developer Ecosystem.

As a Team Lead, you’ll collaborate with Product, Design, and Foundation to drive product and technology innovation and development, working closely with other engineering teams locally and across the world! You will lead and guide the team to contribute to the Zendesk platform, identifying scaling issues early and architecting solutions around them, balancing product delivery with BAU and engineering roadmap work, and proactively advocating for and educating colleagues in good software engineering practices.

This is a hands-on role, where you’ll spend up to 30% of your day in the codebase.

What You Get To Do Every Day

  • Work closely in a multi-functional team to craft the future of the product.
  • Build a positive relationship with product and other partners.
  • Work closely with your Technical Lead to ensure we deliver sustained value to our customers.
  • Work on continuously improving our delivery, technology, reliability, and processes.
  • Create an environment that is conducive to happy and productive work for you and your team.
  • Support your team members in their individual goals - technical, career and personal. Have regular 1 on 1s to mentor and coach your direct reports.
  • Hire future talented engineers.
  • Organise the team’s development process and help steer the team towards increased value generation.
  • Be hands-on - spend some time contributing to the code base and reviewing code.

What You Bring To The Role
  • Some technical or team leadership experience with a track record of delivering sophisticated and high-quality projects. This doesn’t have to be in a similar role or with an official title.
  • Proven experience leading and delivering features in collaboration with other team members.
  • Proven contributions to team process improvements.
  • Experience partnering with product and business teams to deliver on roadmaps, communicate key information to partners, and set and manage expectations.
  • Great communication and collaboration skills.
  • Hands-on experience in at least one programming language. Working with Ruby/Rails or React is a bonus but is not required.
  • Not afraid to work in legacy codebases or on designing, developing, and deploying new services.
  • Energy to keep the team motivated to deliver towards our vision and a desire to learn and improve.
  • A passion for sustaining a healthy, effective work environment, and a team-first mentality.

We offer a competitive salary package as well as stock, flexible working hours and environment. We're also keen on ongoing learning so you'll develop your skills through pair programming, company events, hackathons, lab days to experiment with new insights and a yearly training allowance too. In addition, you'll be invited, and encouraged, to take part in company-sponsored volunteer initiatives.

If you are passionate about working on a core product with incredible scale, our friendly, encouraging & diverse team is for you.
