JOB DESCRIPTION

Our client is a well-respected client side organisation in the rail and infrastructure area. They are looking for an Safety Officer who is an experienced professional to help manage a large portfolio in the Work, Health and Safety section of the business.

Reporting to the Principal Safety Manager, you will be comfortable providing input into the strategy and direction for WHS systems and be able to add value from the get go. You will build excellent working relationships with contractors, internal staff, multiple consultants, and other departmental managers and quickly understand the culture of the business. 
This role offers a real team culture and a chance for you to diversify your experience. Broadening your skills and experience will be encouraged by management.

Key areas of responsibility include:

(add bullet) Coach and support employees across all levels of the business to facilitate improved rail safety and a positive (?) WHS culture.

  • Provide advice, guidance and support to Asset, Project and Operational Teams to implement approved workplace policies and procedures, and create a safe working environment.
  • Proactively work with the business units, operations, contractors and peers to achieve practical solutions that will achieve regulatory compliance.
  • Support the Principal Advisor Safety and the corporate investigations team in the management of incident notification and internal reporting.
  • Working with teams during Rail Safety and WHS incident investigations to assist in the creation of a quality investigation report; using approved methodologies, providing relevant and practical recommendations to reduce the risk of reoccurrence.
  • Assist with Hazard/Near Miss Reports, providing the relevant manager with advice and guidance in implementing practical solutions and communicating key learning’s

Key Skills:

(Bullet Point) Tertiary qualifications in a recognised WHS or closely related discipline, or relevant equivalent experience.


  • Knowledge of systemic investigation and reporting techniques, with an emphasis on industry and human factors.
  • ICAM or related investigation methodology training and/or experience.
  • Demonstrated experience in a safety advisory role in a multidisciplined environment.
  • Thorough knowledge of relevant WHS legislation, standards and codes of practice including injury management, workers compensation and return to work procedures.
  • Knowledge of or an awareness of rail safety legislation.
  • Ability to understand, analyse and interpret statistical information.
  • Demonstrated commitment to safety and a clear understanding of general safety systems.

This is a lengthy contracting opportunity, giving you the chance to work with a large portfolio and an organisation with offices across Newcastle the Hunter Valley.
