Primary objective
Under the guidance of the Team Leader, undertake inquiries and process applications in accordance with the Guardianship of Adults
Act 2016. Prepare NT Civil and Administrative Tribunal (NTCAT) reports and provide information for renewing, varying or revoking
orders. Liaise with community stakeholders, families and other interested persons providing information about Guardianship and
offering support and assistance as required.
Context statement
The Office of the Public Guardian is an independent statutory body that undertakes guardianship functions. The Office promotes
and protects the rights and interests of adults with impaired decision-making capacity resulting in the need for a guardian. A high
degree of tact and confidentiality in this role is required.
Key duties and responsibilities
1. Assist and represent the Public Guardian pursuant to the Guardianship of Adults Act 2016 in the provision of information to
Northern Territory Civil and Administrative Tribunal (NTCAT) in relation to guardianship matters.
2. Undertake administrative and data processing tasks associated with inquiries, education, reviews and case/file management
required to support the functions of the Office of the Public Guardian.
3. In consultation with stakeholders and service providers, undertake inquiries, interview interested parties and collect
documentary evidence with regard to applications for Guardianship pursuant to the Guardianship of Adults Act 2016 .
4. Compile detailed reports on behalf of the Public Guardian for presentation to the NTCAT.
5. Action as directed complaints and other matters referred to, or initiated by either the Public Guardian or members of NTCAT.
6. Follow defined service quality standards and Workplace Health and Safety (WHS) policies and procedures related to the work
being undertaken in order to ensure the services and workplace of the Office of the Public Guardian are of a high standard and
adhere to WHS requirements.
Selection criteria
Essential
1. Demonstrated experience in working within legislative frameworks such as the Guardianship of Adults Act 2016, related
legislation, policies and standards relating to people with disabilities and ageing.
2. Sound knowledge of office based computer systems including experience in client management databases.
3. Proven ability to liaise with key stakeholders to achieve required outcomes.
4. Sound verbal and written communication skills including the preparation of formal reports of a complex nature.
5. The ability to interact effectively and sensitively with people from a variety of backgrounds and diverse cultures including people
with disabilities, mental health concerns and Senior Territorians including those in aged care.
6. Ability to work both independently and as part of a small team and the ability to prioritise workload maintaining
accuracy and attention to detail.
