Snowy Hydro is a dynamic, integrated energy business that has been providing on-demand, reliable energy to Australia for over 70 years. Snowy Hydro owns and operates a powerful combination of generation assets, including the 4100 megawatt Snowy Mountains Scheme, gas and diesel plants and has recently contracted wind and solar energy. We also provide electricity and gas to more than 1.1 million retail customers through Red Energy and Lumo Energy.


Snowy 2.0 is the next chapter in the Snowy Scheme's history. The 2000 megawatt pumped-hydro expansion of the Snowy Scheme will link two existing dams, Tantangara and Talbingo, through a 27km underground tunnel and a new underground power station. It is the largest committed renewable energy project in Australia and it will underpin the nation's secure and stable transition to a low-carbon emissions future at the lowest cost for consumers.


We are seeking an experienced Project Lawyer to join our Snowy 2.0 Owner's Team. This role will see you providing advice on all legal aspects of the Snowy 2.0 Project, with a particular focus on assisting with the management of contractual correspondence and claims. This is a 4 year fixed term contract, based in Cooma.


Reporting to Corporate Counsel, key accountabilities will include:


  • Provide strategic and technical legal advice on contract law, particularly in relation to the EPC Contract for the Project
  • Drafting and reviewing correspondence with contractors, regulators and other stakeholders with respect to the Project
  • Providing legal and commercial advice with respect to contractual claims, key member of the claims committee
  • Drafting submissions to the Employer’s Representative and Dispute Avoidance and Adjudication Committee in respect of claims
  • Draft working papers for Claims Committee on strategic options to address claims, with recommended best option
  • Preparation of effective, legally enforceable contractual documentation for procurement, including Standard Form Documents and review of counterparties’ terms and conditions
  • Provide legal advice to the Owner’s Team Safety and Environment Teams on their legal and compliance obligations


To be successful in this role, you will possess:


  • Must hold a Bachelor of Laws with 8 years of more experience in construction or operations
  • Eligible to hold a practicing certificate in NSW
  • Experience in back end construction law in a major project environment
  • Demonstrated experience in providing expert legal advice on complex or contentious matters
  • Experience in commercial negotiation and other dispute resolution processes, and ability to encourage relevant dispute resolution processes
  • Knowledge of EPC and EPCM style of contract models
  • Understanding of delay analysis and claims experience
  • Experience in FIDIC contracts and/or major underground construction projects is highly desirable
