The successful applicant will be responsible for: supervising and directing operations within the assigned area; supervising and directing contractor and subcontractor activities; subordinate contract supervisors and others, as assigned. The successful applicant will ensure assigned construction operations, including contractors’ and subcontractors’ performance are in compliance with specifications and within schedules and budgets and will perform general functions inherent in all supervisory field positions.

The role will also see you participate in the formulation and development of construction plans, schedules, and procedures, negotiation with contractors and subcontractors.

The role will initially be Adelaide based as part of the construction team assisting with the formulation and development of construction plans, schedules, and procedures, and will ultimately be site based.


The Area Manager Hot Metals is responsible for supervising and directing operations within the assigned area. This role supervises and directs contractors, subordinate supervisors and others, as assigned while ensuring assigned construction operations and contractors performance are in compliance with specifications and within schedules and budgets.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Provide leadership for safety, accident and fire prevention for the Area. This includes safety overview of various contractors, preparation of safety procedures and leading Bechtel and subcontractor safety meetings.
  2. Provide environmental leadership to ensure that Bechtel and subcontractors manage and control the works in compliance with the EIS and EA requirements within the area of responsibility.
  3. Responsible for jobsite operations including onsite activities of Bechtel, contractors, subcontractors, suppliers, clients and their representatives and others as may be assigned within area of responsibility.
  4. Establishes, coordinates and implements construction schedules, manning charts, and material and equipment requirements.
  5. Responsible for overall supervision of personnel in assigned area of responsibility.
  6. Responsible for supervising and directing contractor(s) in an Engineering Procurement and Construction Management (EPCM) supervisor capacity within the civil discipline.
  7. Responsible for administration of assigned area(s) contractual activities. Participates in contracts and subcontracts negotiations.
  8. Coordinate safety training and enforce safe work practices at all times in conjunction with the Environmental Safety and Health Supervisor.
  9. Champion the cause of ZERO Accident Philosophy. Ensure that Bechtel and local/national safety codes, requirements and standards are being complied with within assigned area of responsibility.
  10. Ensure the most current design documents are provided to contractors and subcontractors to complete the works, and that all design changes are approved prior to implementation.
  11. Monitor the activities of contractors and subcontractors to ensure compliance with specifications and schedules.
  12. Interface with Labor/Industrial Relations for craft recruitment and training programs. Approve contractor and subcontractor workforce requirements and review work accomplished by each craft.
  13. Responsible for implementing corporate project policies, procedures and instructions within assigned operations.
  14. Prepare and present reports and forecasts, including summary of construction progress, craft personnel forecasts, and expenditures forecasts.
  15. Perform employee reviews and identify training and development opportunities for subordinate civil personnel.
  16. Perform other duties as required by Bechtel management.


The successful applicant shall possess the following skills:

· Knowledge of all phases of construction operations relating to field activities of engineering disciplines, construction technologies and jobsite management.

· Knowledge of Bechtel’s Zero Accident Philosophy.

· Knowledge of control measures required in a monsoonal environment.

· Knowledge of supervisory functions relating to field activities.

· Computer literate in word processing and spreadsheet applications.

· Demonstrated leadership in a team-based environment.

· Knowledge of the use of subcontracts, and the contractor and subcontractor’s responsibilities contained in subcontract documents.

· Experience working with, supervising and administering contractors and subcontractors and/or Direct Hire workforce.

· Skill in oral and written communication

These skills and knowledge can be acquired through:

  • A recognized degree in an engineering or scientific discipline, or
  • Specialized courses in construction technology and management, and/or
  • Prior practical work experience leading to a thorough understanding of the knowledge described above.
