Overview of Frankston Emergency Department

The Frankston Emergency Department opened in February 2015 and has approximately 73,000 presentations per year, with 20% of these being pediatric presentations. The Emergency Department had five state of the art resuscitation bays including a class-N negative pressure room. It also has four specialized pediatric cubicles with a separated waiting room. There are 32 Emergency Short Stay beds for patients not requiring hospital admission but greater than four hour stay. We use the clinical system FirstNet for all documentation, assessments and medication ordering and administration. The Frankston Emergency Department is a dynamic and fast paced environment with a strong emphasis on team work and support.

What is the MH & AOD Enhanced Response Team based in the Emergency Department?

The Peninsula Health Mental Health and Alcohol and other dug (MH&AOD) Enhanced Response team in the Emergency Department (Crisis Hub), is one of six MH & AOD Crisis Hubs funded by the State Government to enhance the care delivery for clients from the MH & AOD client group. They are designed to be a specialized stream of the Emergency Department caring for patients presenting with urgent high acuity mental health, alcohol and other drug issues, and/or physical health issues needing emergency department level assessment, diagnosis, treatment and assertive outreach.

What You Will Be Doing

The Social Worker will work with patients presenting to the Emergency Department with complex psychosocial issues and will work along side MH &AOD with intersecting presentations to provide clinical leadership, holistic patient centered care from admission through to discharge and beyond

The Social Worker’s Responsibilities will include:

• Assessing, planning and implementing care for patients
• Conducting psychosocial assessment and intervention plans in consultation with consumers and their families to assist in discharge planning
• Integral role in supporting the assertive outreach stream
• Provide clinical leadership to all Emergency Department staff
• Provide support and guidance to the Emergency Department and outreach stream of the team

What You Need

We anticipate you will have:
• Member of (or eligibility for) membership of the AASW
• Experience working in an Emergency Department
• Experience working with family violence and/or prevention of violence
• Experience in Mental Health and AOD
• Excellent skills in comprehensive assessment, planning and counselling
• Advanced knowledge and application of Social Work theory
• Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
• Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively
• Current Victorian Employee Working with Children Check or willingness to obtain at own expense
