Duties
The Principal Advisor Maritime Safety is responsible for providing expert advice to senior management and external stakeholders regarding port operations, management of harbors, commercial and recreational boating, marine pollution response, waterways management, vessel standards and current relevant developments and their potential implications to the agency policies and strategic plans.

The incumbent will manage high profile and high value services by providing a significant contribution the managing of MOUs, SLAs, Port Operating Agreements, environmental issues and vessel standards which will inspire confidence in the role of Marine Services. The incumbent is also responsible for effectively developing and implementing high level operational advice on maritime and navigational safety and marine environmental issues in line with the State’s strategic plan for SA Waters.

Requirements
Master Unlimited seafarer’s certificate under the Navigation Act 2012 of the Commonwealth or Qualification under the law of some other place recognised under the Marine Safety (Domestic Commercial Vessel) National Law or the Navigation Act 2012 of the Commonwealth as equivalent to such a certificate of competency or seafarer’s certificate as Master Unlimited.

Special Conditions

  • This role has been classified as a position of trust and the incumbent is subject to a satisfactory criminal history record check in line with Departmental policies and procedures;
  • Some out of hours work and inter/intrastate travel including overnight absences will be required;
  • The incumbent must be suitable to be appointed as an Authorised Officer under relevant Acts and Commonwealth Acts; and
  • In the event of an emergency any staff member of the Marine Safety and Compliance Section may be required to assist in the response and recovery activities. This may potentially include long hours and challenging work conditions.

Tenure of Vacancy
Temporary appointment up to 12 months

Remuneration
ASO8 - $114,105 to $118,413 per annum
