About the Role
In this role you will be working in the City Works team and you will be responsible for the service, repair and maintenance of Council’s vehicles, plant, and equipment. You will work autonomously under the guidance of the Mechanic in Charge and will continuously demonstrate a high level of workmanship, customer service and flexibility. Much of the work will be scheduled maintenance, however high level of problem-solving skills and the ability to work under pressure is essential to allow you to minimise the operational impact of vehicle downtime.

This is a temporary full-time position for six months.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Undertaking effective scheduled servicing, repairs and maintenance of Council’s fleet of vehicles, heavy plant and equipment in a professional, commercially minded and customer focused manner in Council’s Fleet workshops in accordance with manufacturer’s recommendations or established procedures.
  • Providing professional and efficient roadside breakdown services for Council’s fleet of vehicles, heavy plant and equipment.
  • Ensuring all workshop plant, equipment and tools are operated, maintained, stored and secured in a safe manner and in accordance with all relevant legislation, regulations, policies and procedures.
  • Complying with all of Council’s policies and procedures, including appropriate use of personal protective equipment (PPE).
  • Providing information and training to employees and apprentices, as required, to enable them to carry out required maintenance activities on vehicles, plant and equipment.
  • Ensuring that all workshop time sheets and repair dockets are completed accurately and submitted timely.

About you
To be successful in this role, you will have:

  • Certificate III trade qualification as an Automotive Technician, Diesel Fitter or Mobile Plant mechanic.
  • A current unrestricted car, medium rigid, heavy rigid or heavy combination driver’s license
  • Ability to perform manual work, including the lifting of weights, in accordance with the relevant Occupational Health and Safety guidelines.
  • Extensive experience in the servicing, maintenance and repair of wide range of vehicles, plant and equipment.


  • Effective interpersonal communication skills and ability to develop rapport with a range of stakeholders, including team members.
  • Qualifications and demonstrated ability in fault diagnosis and rectification of hydraulic and mechanical power transfer systems, air conditioning and auto electrical systems.
  • Ability to understand and utilise workshop manuals and parts catalogues with demonstrated ability relating to parts and fluid interpretation.
  • An ability to competently use a range of specialized automotive diagnostic tools, functional computer literacy and accurate record keeping.
  • An ability to carry out minor fabrication, welding and repair work.
