About the role

The Shift Supervisor will lead and manage a diverse team of employees in the key operational areas of Terminal and Linehaul via the implementation of cultural change, safety processes, work-process and performance improvement programs. The position will devolve accountabilities throughout the workforce whilst maintaining a superior customer service culture, positively contributing to the business and meeting business objectives.

The incumbent is responsible for undertaking the safe and efficient planning and coordination of the train load and unload process. The role must manage the allocation and availability of Pacific National (PN) equipment to satisfy customer needs and work in conjunction with Asset & Infrastructure Services to deliver on equipment availability.

Reporting to the Operations Supervisor, the individual will lead and manage shift based teams in the daily operations of the Moolabin/Tennyson Terminal via the initiation and implementation of operational processes, plans and systems which result in a planned, controlled, pro-active approach to the terminals business and operational requirements. The position supports the implementation of the operational plan and ensures terminal resources (predominantly labour and equipment), and the terminals infrastructure and assets (predominantly track and tarmac) are utilised in a manner that delivers superior service and performance at the lowest unit cost.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Leadership of a small team of terminal staff, including rostering, coaching and mentoring employees to ensure their skills are developed and maintained.
  • Implementation of the Pacific National's Divisional Core Values Program ensuring all Terminal employees understand and carry out their responsibilities.
  • Identify safety improvement opportunities and manage, develop and deliver Terminal WHS&E initiatives that eliminate risk and reduce injuries and incidents within the business.
  • Assist with the administration of the Pacific National's Integrated Safety Management System ensuring a safe workplace for all employees and compliance with Company, legislative and regulatory requirements.
  • Assist with the completion of incident investigations ensuring they are completed in a timely manner, root causes are identified, safety actions are identified and implemented in a timely manner, and outcomes are shared.
  • Provide operational assistance as required and where qualified (i.e. Train Operations, shunting, train examinations, roll-byes, stabling).
  • Contribute as a senior member of the Terminal Operations team ensuring business performance is optimised through cooperation with other managers (e.g. Terminals, operations, Planning etc.) and the accurate reporting and identification of areas for improvement and development.
  • Ensure the correct and timely maintenance and testing of safety and technical equipment. Manage the allocation and maintenance of Pacific National motor vehicle fleet.

This role is required to work rotating shifts including day and night shifts.

About you

To be successful in this role, you will have a strong safety background and possess:

  • Rail or transportation experience and/or appropriate heavy industry experience
  • Ideally, experience in leading, coaching, and motivating a small team in a busy environment, with a key focus on building and reinforcing a strong safety culture
  • Strong problem solving, computer literacy and analytical skills
  • Excellent communication and influencing skills with the ability to communicate at all levels
  • Tertiary qualifications in Transport / Logistics or Business Management will be highly regarded.
