Primary objective

Provide field and technical support for an externally funded Panama disease Tropical Race 4 (TR4) research project in the Plant

Pathology section of the Plant Health Laboratories, which includes fieldwork, recording of crop performance data, and maintenance

of machinery, equipment and stores.

Key duties and responsibilities

1. Undertake the day-to-day horticultural duties required for growing and maintaining large-scale field trails of banana crops for

research projects.

2. Maintain irrigation systems, machinery and manage crops including pest and disease control.

3. Collect field data including samples, as directed, and prepare for further analysis.

4. Maintain the farm facility, farm equipment, machinery and field stores.

5. Commit to workplace health and safety and adhere to workplace health and safety policies and procedures.

6. Promote and follow on farm biosecurity measures.

Selection criteria


1. An appropriate Certificate/Diploma or equivalent in agriculture/horticulture and/or considerable relevant work experience.

2. Proven experience in growing horticultural crops for research field trials, operating and maintaining farm machinery and

equipment relevant to horticultural production.

3. Ability to work independently, forward plan and develop personal work programs, as well as being able to function as an

effective team member.

4. Demonstrated commitment to workplace health and safety and the ability to comply with all workplace health and safety

policies and procedures.

5. Proven experience with on farm biosecurity measures for plant biosecurity.

6. Ability to interact effectively with people of diverse cultural backgrounds.

7. Current C class drivers licence and ability to operate a manual vehicle.


1. Training in the use of machinery and plant equipment including chemical use.

2. Experience in managing and growing bananas in large-scale field trials.

This position will be based at Coastal Plains Research Farm located in Middle Point which is approximately 100 kilometres by road

from Darwin.
