About Us

Victim Services, Support and Reform (VSSR) is part of the Service Delivery Reform, Coordination and Workplace Safety Group.

VSSR provides strategic leadership and advice on victims of crime issues across government, as well as direct service provision through a range of programs including:

  • Victims of Crime Helpline
  • Victims Register
  • Victims Assistance Program.

In September 2018 the Victorian Government tabled in Parliament the Victorian Law Reform Commission's review of the Financial Assistance Scheme (FAS) for victims of crime, currently administered by the Victims of Crime Assistance Tribunal (VOCAT).

The review recommended widespread reform of the VOCAT scheme.

The Government has accepted in principle all of the report's 100 recommendations and committed to undertaking significant work to progress the recommendations. 

About the Role

The Senior Legal Policy Officer will develop key legislative amendments that underpin the proposed new FAS.

The role will:

  • provide advice on legislative issues impacting victims of crime
  • develop victim-focused legislation
  • influence the development of policy to elevate victims' voices.

This role will suit an experienced legal policy officer with legislative development experience or legislation officer who can hit the ground running and achieve deliverables with limited supervision in tight timeframes.

About You

As our ideal candidate, you will have:

  • excellent knowledge of Cabinet processes and Government decision-making processes
  • demonstrated high level analytical, legal and policy skills, with the ability to use data to inform policy development
  • demonstrated high level experience in legislative development
  • strong communication skills, with the ability to build and nurture collaborative working relationships
  • experience in researching, preparing and presenting a wide variety of high level written documentation
  • demonstrated ability to achieve objectives within tight timeframes
  • an understanding of victims' issues, would be desirable.
