This Peer Support Worker position is based on the Perinatal & Infant Mental Health team (PIMH). This position will work collaboratively with other team members (CNCs, Psychologists and Psychiatrists) to enhance the PIMH service and develop, provide and evaluate individual perinatal peer support as well as perinatal emotional wellbeing and recovery focussed group interventions, delivered via both face-to-face and telehealth modes.
The Peer Support Worker will draw upon their lived experience of perinatal mental health challenges and their personal recovery journey to develop empathic relationships and support personal recovery for consumers of the South Eastern Sydney Local Health District (SESLHD). Specifically, the position will support women experiencing mental distress during the perinatal period.
The goal of the position is to support perinatal women through their mental health service journey by providing individual consultations, education and group interventions aimed at facilitating recovery principles of hope, choice, self-determination and social connectedness.
Key focus areas include; supporting women through their initial referral and engagement process, working with women and the treating team to prevent hospital admissions, and to provide post discharge support from Mental Health Inpatient units.
Based in community mental health centres, the Perinatal Peer Support Worker role will span the full range of mental health settings through providing support antenatally and continuing postnatally, assertive in-reach support to women in Mental Health Inpatient Units and follow through support with women in the community.
The Perinatal Peer Support Worker will facilitate and support connections to community-based perinatal organisations and services. The position will have a key role in the development of resources for consumers, their families and carers, and clinicians. The position will also participate in the development, delivery and evaluation of training to mental health clinicians, maternity and child & family health clinicians, and other key stakeholders.
