Position Classification: Staff Specialist

Remuneration: $240,419 - $296,682 per annum (based on full-time). 25% ED Physician Allowance may apply.

Here is the opportunity to work in a Major Tertiary referral hospital or one of our Regional hospitals. All of this while living next to the beach, without having the hustle and bustle of the big city.

A variety of full-time and part-time Staff Specialist positions have become available at Wollongong, Shellharbour and Shoalhaven Hospitals for passionate and motivated individuals to pursue a career in Emergency Medicine.

Our District Emergency Departments see a combined total of nearly 150,000 patients per year. We have access to most specialities within our region, including general, trauma and sub-specialty surgery, general and sub-specialty medicine, paediatrics, obstetrics and gynaecology and mental health.

The Illawarra Shoalhaven is located on the South Coast of NSW and is a 90 minute drive from Sydney and a 60 minute drive from Sydney’s International Airport. It has a relaxed holiday vibe, a very temperate climate and affordable beach-side accommodation. It boasts excellent local schools and is also home to the University of Wollongong, among the top 250 universities in the world. The Illawarra Shoalhaven is home to a number of stunning coastal villages and rural hamlets with very short commute times into our well-developed metropolitan areas. Nestled between rainforest covered slopes and post-card ready coastlines the area offers a range of outdoor activities, vibrant shopping and engaging entertainment to suit any lifestyle.

The ISLHD Emergency Departments are accredited by the Australasian College for Emergency Medicine (ACEM) for 18 months at Wollongong Hospital and 6 months at Shoalhaven Hospital for Advanced Emergency Registrar training. Shellharbour Hospital is in the process of securing 6 months linked accreditation with Wollongong. Further opportunities for teaching includes medical students from the local University of Wollongong Graduate School of Medicine through to the ACEM Emergency Medicine Certificate and Diploma. We also offer simulation, research and service development opportunities via these resources.

As an Emergency Physician at Shoalhaven District Memorial Hospital you will be entering the role at an exciting time for our Emergency Department. The hospital is currently undergoing a $434 million re-development project which will include a new state-of-the-art emergency department. We are recruiting to a number of new positions created to support our existing team as we increase our workforce to meet the demands and challenges of 40 000 attendances per annum. Rapidly gaining a reputation for training and development, we pride ourselves in supporting staff achieve their potential and pursue their areas of special interest. A remarkable opportunity to practice rural emergency medicine in coastal NSW within 60 minutes of Wollongong and 2 hours of Sydney.

As an Emergency Physician at Shellharbour Hospital, you will be a part of a progressive team of clinicians who are valued and respected. With a full range of adult and paediatric medical and surgical presentations, your diagnostic skills will be utilised to make timely and appropriate disposition decisions in an environment where only General Medicine, Geriatrics and Psychiatry are on-site – you will appreciate the receptive relationship you have with Wollongong, the referral hospital for the region just 30 minutes away. Your critical care skills will be appreciated both in the department and as a back up to the in-patient services with whom you will have a collegiate working relationship. Your department management skills will be greatly utilised in maintaining flow and supervising other clinicians while also enabling you to engage one on one with a variety of patient presentations. Your non-clinical time will be spent pursuing career development opportunities, teaching and training at both an undergraduate and postgraduate level and participating in the activities of the broader hospital. You will be supported by an engaged hospital and department executive who share the same CORE values.

As an Emergency Physician at Wollongong Hospital, you will be part of a dedicated and cohesive team providing high quality, patient-centred care in one of the busiest Emergency Departments in New South Wales with approximately 70,000 presentations annually. The Wollongong Hospital is a large teaching hospital, and the Regional Referral Centre for the Illawarra Shoalhaven. It has a strong partnership with the University of Wollongong to support research opportunities; and offers the potential to work with Developing EM on future conference and educational projects.

We are looking for individuals who are dedicated, enthusiastic, and enjoy being part of a close knit team. Successful applicants will play a key role in helping shape the Emergency Service for the future. Candidates must demonstrate strong leadership qualities, a kind and enthusiastic approach and have a passion for Emergency Medicine. This is a fantastic opportunity to work in a high performing, tertiary Emergency Service in a beautiful coastal location just 60 minutes south of Sydney.

You will work 4 x 10 hour shifts as a full-time worker and enjoy a good mix of acuity, pathology and paediatrics.

Selection Criteria

1. Specialist registration or eligible for specialist registration as a Medical Practitioner with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA) within six months.

2. Fellowship of the Australasian College for Emergency Medicine (FACEM) and/or equivalent specialist recognition, or eligible to receive FACEM and/or specialist recognition within six months.

3. Evidence of continuing medical education and self-monitoring/audit practices consistent with the scope of practice requirements of the position.

4. Proven capacity and/or experience in the provision of effective high quality services, demonstrated through successful clinical practice in an environment appropriate to the requirements of the position including evidence of participation in quality improvement activities relevant to the specialty.

5. Demonstrated commitment to teaching with experience in teaching both undergraduate and postgraduate students and other staff of the hospital.

6. Demonstrate the skills and attitudes appropriate as a Senior Medical Practitioner including modelling a high standard of professional behaviour to junior medical staff.

7. Demonstrated ability to work effectively and harmoniously with medical and other health services colleagues as part of a multi-disciplinary health care team and demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with patients, colleagues, and staff and to work as an effective member of the clinical team across multiple sites.

8. Demonstrated experience in and commitment to research relevant to the role and needs of the Department.
