The Advanced Health Worker - Mens Business (Sexual Health) role is to enhance the health and wellbeing of Indigenous and Torres Strait Islander offenders, at both Cleveland Youth Detention Centre and Townsville Correctional Centre, through the provision of high quality, accountable and culturally appropriate services focussed on sexual health.

Under s25 of the Anti-Discrimination Act 1991, there is a genuine occupational requirement for the incumbent to be Indigenous to the Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander Community.

This position has the following responsibilities including, but not limited to -

  • To work collaboratively within multi-disciplinary teams to provide quality sexual and reproductive health care, including health promotion, education and public health intervention strategies to offenders. The incumbent is required to work with women within Offender Health at Cleveland Youth Detention Centre and Townsville Correctional Centre.
  • An ability to confidently advocate for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander sexual and reproductive health issues through the use of strong negotiation, conflict resolution and networking skills.
  • Under the direction of the Nurse Unit Manager and with reference to training, knowledge and skills
  • Provide screening for Sexually Transmissible Infections and Blood Borne Viruses
  • Make appropriate referrals and liaise with other health professionals and agencies
  • Organise relevant contact tracing strategies following direction from a Nursing Officer
  • To plan, implement and evaluate public health interventions including health promotion activities which are relevant to the Indigenous and Torres Strait Islander community of the correctional and/or youth detention centre.
Mandatory: Certificate IV in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Primary Health Care (PHC) or higher.

Potential applicants are advised that the Commission for Children and Young People and Child Guardian Act 2000 requires Queensland Health to seek a ‘working with children check' from the Commission for Children and Young People and Child Guardian prior to appointment to this position.

Drivers Licence: This position requires the incumbent to operate a class C motor vehicle and an appropriate license endorsement to operate this vehicle is required. Proof of this endorsement must be provided prior to the commencement of duty

How you will be assessed: You will be assessed on your ability to demonstrate the following key requirements, knowledge and experience which is outlined under ‘The role'. The ideal applicant will be someone who has proven ability and can demonstrate the following:
  • Previous experience in Primary Health Care essential and Sexual Health an advantage.
  • Evidence of good verbal and written communication skills essential.
  • Evidence of previous ability to work collaboratively within a multi-disciplinary team within a supervised environment.
  • Ability to deliver health promotion related to Sexual Health within the community specifically related to women's business.
  • Ability to participate in community screens which will occasionally take you out of town overnight.
