JOB DESCRIPTION

The Sentence Administration Unit, within SMS, is responsible for the lawful detainment and release of prisoners. Sentence calculations are a core departmental business that involves interpreting and complying with the orders of the court, accurately calculating sentences in accordance with those court orders and recording this in the Integrated Offender Management System (IOMS).

This role supports Sentence Management Services through ongoing review, enhancement and auditing of sentence administration practices and operational processes and assists with the ongoing revision and updating of the Sentence Calculation and Administration Manual to align with legislation updates, case law and legal advice to ensure lawful detention practices. It will also assist to increase the capability of staff across SMS by providing advice and training when required.

In This Role You Will

  • Interpret, analyse and provide high level advice in relation to court documentation, sentence calculations and sentence administration
practices.
  • Contribute to legislative and procedural reforms undertaken by QCS or other agencies which impact on sentence calculation or
administration practices or processes.
  • Prepare comprehensive, accurate and timely advice to stakeholders, both internal and external, and senior management regarding
sentence management trends and issues and, where necessary, identify and recommend remedial action.
  • Prepare detailed incident or procedural reviews and briefings related to unlawful detentions and discharges in error.
  • Undertake audits relevant to SMS functions and provide advice on findings that impact on sentence management; including
recommending risk mitigation strategies; and procedural updates to ensure accuracy of functions associated with sentence
administration.
  • Attend and represent SMS/QCS at internal and external stakeholder engagement meetings.
  • Manage the SMS Queensland Wide Interlinked Courts (QWIC) and the Suitability, Checking, Recording & Monitoring (SCRAM) access
registers.

There are no mandatory qualifications for this position. Well demonstrated experience with the ability to rapidly acquire a high level of expertise in sentence administration practices and processes is a requirement of the role, in order to ensure the lawful detention of prisoners in QCS custody.
