MARKETING MANAGER WITH STRONG COMMERCIAL/ANALYTICS/PEOPLE SKILLS?

  • 18-24 month contract but company growth could see permanent roles emerge

Picture a very successful local business that is part of an offshore multinational that has been an industry force for some 100 years. They have a clear vision of the future, are strategically sound and extremely well led. They have a number of business units in Australia, typically market leaders in their niche. Never complacent, they are constantly striving to build on their exceptionally high levels of customer service and retention, looking for new ways to add value to their customers’ businesses. They totally get that success comes through their people and so they hire and develop the best, providing a supportive and family friendly culture that encourages stretch, engagement and no status quo. They are a disciplined business that values ideas and participation.

The current and successful Marketing Manager has been seconded to a major project for the next 18 to 24 months. Our job is to backfill that role, not with someone who can just keep things ticking over, but with an experienced marketing manager who will work right across all business units and play an active part in maintaining their growth trajectory. To this end you’ll actively lead a settled and high achieving team of marketers who are right across the product and the markets. What they’ll be looking for is an engaged manager who can help them develop and who can bring an extra dimension to the impact of marketing on revenue growth, lead generation, customer retention, and sales support.

In effect, Marketing is a shared service. Within that context you can expect to develop the marketing strategy and plans needed to support business objectives and continue enhancing the brand. From a commercial perspective we need to see that you understand the numbers around marketing and what they mean to each part of the business. This is going to involve conversations around those numbers and, through them, influencing directions and outcomes. You can expect to be active in new product marketing plans, engaging product opinion leaders to help shape future look products, and assisting in their pricing. Overlaying all these things is the need to continue developing your team and helping them maintain their current high levels of success.

It’s most likely that you’re tertiary qualified in Marketing or Communications, but of even greater importance is good, broad based marketing management experience. As our client said to us, he wants to see skills and track record most definitely, but without that real human element to leading the function, this person cannot be successful. A background in B2B products around industrial, scientific or technology markets would be preferred (this isn’t a role for a consumer products/B2C marketer) but we will throw the net quite wide as long as there are proven skills in leading a marketing team that makes a difference, in designing and implementing marketing plans that positively impact top and bottom lines, and reporting the analytics that prove the plan is working.

There is a global marketing team offshore. They tend to do a lot of work on websites and related matters. You’ll need to be able to work in with them, tailoring to local conditions and using strong analytics to prove your case. So, without a doubt you’ll be a strong tactical marketer with good exposure to digital marketing (SEM), telemarketing (high end B2B), cross divisional selling strategies, and digital events including webinars. At a personal level you’ll need to be engaging at all levels, a proven communicator who is good with detail, approachable and no-nonsense. By that we mean you know your job and what has to be done, but you how to encourage and when to push back.

In closing, we do want to emphasise that this is an 18 to 24 month contract. It is imperative that you be in a position to see the contract through to the end. Having said this, however, the company is experiencing strong growth that could see a range of permanent opportunities emerge at the end of the contract period.
