Head of Strategy - WE Communications (Full Time)

The Head of Strategy role is a critical role in supporting WE Communication’s modernization and growth strategy. It bears responsibility for building the business’ insights capability and driving new business acquisition in the market. Brands in Motion (agency IP) and Momentum (agency methodology) will ground the offer and point of view.

 The Head of Strategy should have the knowledge and personality to educate and excite around insights. They should be an enterprising, self-starter who is well organized, creative, independent, and self-motivated, with exceptional presentation, written and oral communications skills, who can exhibit acute business acumen and has experience in managing/building an insights/data-centric offer.

 They must have extensive experience in research, consulting and client management skills; along with an in-depth understanding of marketing, brand and communications. They must excel in business development, team management, and creating strong relationships with leaders and influential stakeholders. They’ll be up to date on the latest research technologies, excited by ‘what could be’ and want to move the department forward. They will have the proven skill to grow new and existing client portfolios.

 Central to the role is supporting the implementation of Momentum as both an organizational principle and methodology.

 The Head of Strategy role has three key work streams*:

  • Be a leading force in our new business process and activity by providing strategic, brand & creative direction to clients & new business pursuits across all team’s agency wide (65%)
  • Building the agency strategy/planning offering & team, developing a productive and commercially viable unit of strategists across brand strategy, comms strategy and consulting in line with Momentum (25%)
  • Drive the evolution of WE’s global brand, including vision, value prop, positioning, etc. (10%)

 Strategy Portfolio Development and Agency Business Development

  • Define offering/capability and go to market plan for Strategy Department 
  • Looks for opportunities to commercialise the strategy / brand offering within WE to build and support a book of business
  • Generates and develops organic growth and diversification opportunities with existing clients by driving Momentum methodology and bringing in relevant specialist capabilities and new services to clients.
  • ‘Work in a cross-agency function supporting business developing including generating leads and working on pitches across the agency providing strategy and creative direction as required. Within this we expect you to be involved in major pitches or business development opportunities which are important to the agency in billings/sector/name.
  • Support the upskill of the agency (over time) in terms of insights, strategy development and creative ideation – identifying and supporting advocates / champions in each team where appropriate.
  • Ensuring business development you are involved in includes application of the Momentum framework bringing in relevant specialist capabilities and new services to clients.
  • Formalise widespread adoption of Momentum & BIM as the through line in our thinking and work to lead to further organic opportunities
  • Is an advocate for agency IP and how teams use BIM and Momentum to drive consistency in client approach across markets.
  • In collaboration with the EMT, ensures the right level of insights and new perspectives are delivered to clients; and are also applied to new business
  • Delivers great work for clients that exceeds expectations, is creative and makes positive business impact for the clients and the agency.

 Thought Leadership

  • Provides leadership and vision for the sector, including development and execution of strategic business plan to enable differentiation for WE.
  • Is able to articulate key trends at global, regional and local market levels; able to identify future needs of the sector as well as the short- and long-term requirements for brands.
  • Develops a differentiated and relevant point-of-view aligned to BIM that maximizes agency IP in context of the sector.
  • Seen as a credible leader and part of the competitive set, the Head of Strategy should actively participate in relevant industry events and publish quality content across influential industry platforms.
  • Industry thought leadership representation, including speaking opportunities (as relevant) and development of fully local WE Australia BIM report, authored locally by Head of Strategy (2020)

Team Leadership

  • Works with the EMT to identify and service agency strategy requirements including servicing current clients and supporting new business
  • Builds a like-minded, highly-functional sector team to drive consistency of experience for teams and clients
  • Provide leadership, line management and mentorship to existing Strategy Team, including Brand Strategist and Creative Strategist
  • Creates a sense of community with the strategy team and within the broader agency to foster knowledge development and sharing
  • Provide leadership to brand strategist to develop tiered turnkey brand solution that includes brand framework, logo, visual ID, templated website and priority collateral
  • Helps teams articulate a point of view based around sector and agency IP to help build and shape careers.
  • Ensures teams are equipped with the latest insights and trends relevant to the consumer and corporate sector and deliver regular sector-specific knowledge-based training – either directly or through key third parties.

 Global and Inter-agency Collaboration

  • Drive the evolution of WE’s global brand, including vision, value prop, positioning, etc.
  • Works closely with the regional I&A lead and team based in Singapore to build local capability and offering
  • Maximizes our work for existing clients by bringing new resources and creativity, and by connecting our work for global clients across multiple markets in NA, EMEA and APAC.
  • Demonstrates leadership perspective and builds productive relationships with peers, clients and partners locally and where appropriate, across regions
  • Work closely with the Design Director to evolve the local WE brand creative
  • Ensures high quality work is delivered across all client business and collaborates with relevant leads to improve approach to local and global account management


 An understanding of how to deploy Momentum methodology and expertise from Insights/Data & Analytics, Planning, Creative, Content, Social, Digital across the sector communications spectrum.

  • Highly networked and respected within the communications industry in Australia; proven track record of signing new clients and cultivating relationships in the right circles. 
  • Actively involved in all aspects of business management, including revenue growth and profitability of clients.
  • Strong understanding of the future of integrated communications and how agency IP and strategy and insights can present a roadmap for the future.
  • Executive presence and an impactful communication style that motivates others.
  • Diplomatic, high influencing capability and persuasive approach to change.
  • Active on social platforms and able to use profile for business impact.


  • Must be able to work with teams across various geographic locations (virtual team structures).
  • Fast-paced team environment (frequent tight deadlines, multitasking, etc.).
  • Open office environment with a growing and diverse team (flat structure).
  • Roll your sleeves up, lead-from-the-front style leadership.
  • Strong presentation and communication skills.
  • Experience working globally or with colleagues in multiple locations; ability to travel up to 25%.
