Overview of the position

The MCA’s vision is to take a leadership role in shaping a creative and equitable Australia that values contemporary art and artists, and we are committed to making contemporary art accessible and inspiring for everyone.

Reporting to the Head of Communications, Marketing & Visitor Experience, the Public Relations Manager is responsible for managing all media campaigns across all areas of the Museum. In consultation with the Head of Communications, Marketing & Visitor Experience, the role implements communications strategies working collaboratively with other departments, and identifies media opportunities that:

  • enhance the Museum’s reputation
  • communicate MCA’s key messages
  • and embrace the diversity of the MCA Collection and exhibitions, public, creative learning and access programs, partnerships and staff.

The role works directly with colleagues at all levels of the Museum including the leadership team, artists, media, government, sponsors and corporate partners, industry partners, as well as MCA supporters and audiences. The PR Manager ensures the smooth operation of all media activities and that enquiries are responded to in an efficient manner.


Tasks and responsibilities of the position

  • Manage and implement all MCA media campaigns in collaboration with the Head of Communications & Marketing.
  • Collaborating with the Head of Communications, Marketing & Visitor Experience, develop and implement communication strategies to increase audience awareness and communicate the MCA as one of the leading contemporary art institutions in Australia.
  • Provide and implement strategic media and issue management advice on all programs and related Museum activities.
  • Draft copy for all press materials and oversee approval process for all media-related materials (media releases and invites, photography, quotes, image captions, etc).
  • Manage all media related enquiries: handle local and international media requests (images, interviews, etc) and regularly update the MCA media office to reflect current PR activities.
  • Manage media events, on-site journalists, supervise photoshoots and film crews for exhibitions and events.
  • Host media at MCA events including opening nights, public programs, and fundraising events.
  • Build and maintain strong relationships within key print, radio, TV, and online media; in particular arts and culture, lifestyle, travel, and food and wine, and maintain the media database.
  • Compile and distribute media alerts to MCA staff and Chairman.
  • Identify opportunities to build profiles of key MCA staff members (Director, Leadership teams, Curators, etc) as spokespeople in media, positioning them as experts in their respective fields of vocation.
  • Develop relationships with communications colleagues at partner organisations (e.g. other museums, commercial galleries, artist studios, government, tourism precinct, City of Sydney etc).
  • Work with the MCA’s Development and Enterprises Department to identify opportunities to publicise the MCA’s key partners, sponsors and revenue-generating activities (e.g. Corporate Partners, MCA Store, Membership, MCA Venues, etc).
  • Manage the creation and analysis of media campaign reports as required.
  • Managing the Communications budget. 
  • Speechwriting for the MCA Director and other MCA staff, as required.


Key selection criteria

Essential criteria

Applicants must be able to demonstrate they have:

  • relevant tertiary qualifications in journalism, public relations, marketing, communications, or visual arts
  • a minimum of 5 years’ experience working in a similar role for a gallery, museum, arts organisation or within the not-for-profit sector, either in-house or an agency
  • an understanding of the Australian media landscape, with a proven track record in communicating with media, artists, government, the corporate sector and the general public
  • strong relationships with the Australian arts media and broader news media
  • extensive experience of planning and executing a PR strategy
  • strong interpersonal skills, with the ability to liaise effectively with a wide range of internal and external stakeholders
  • exceptional verbal and written communication skills
  • respect for contemporary art and artists, and for diversity in the workplace
  • strong attention to detail, editing and proofreading skills
  • a track record of working in a collaborative environment and the ability to problem solve
  • high levels of initiative and the ability to work both independently and collaboratively
  • the ability to manage competing priorities and work well under pressure
  • the ability to maintain confidentiality and represent the Museum effectively.

Desirable criteria

It would be good if applicants have:

  • an interest in digital and social media platforms
  • proficiency in Microsoft Office, MailChimp, Adobe Photoshop and InDesign.
