A rare and exciting opportunity has arisen to join a well-known global Telco corporation as their corporate Counsel. The role can be based in Japan, South-East Asia or Western Australia. Reporting to the Regional Counsel based in Australia, you will work on matters across Asia-Pacific.

The role will involve the review, negotiation and drafting of contracts with customers, channel partners, service providers and suppliers in support of the business and operations in the Asia Pacific & Japan region.

You will also assist with a wide variety of other matters that are part of the work of an in-house legal department, including reviews, negotiating and structuring of customer agreements, tenders, vendor and supplier agreements.

You will assist with corporate compliance and governance matters, partner with business leads in developing and structuring policies and procedures to support company requirements and business objectives.

The role will also:

  • Assist in supervision of litigation matters (primarily commercial, employment and IP), including management of outside counsel, Advise on compliance and anti-bribery and corruption matters, and assist in preparing and delivering training on these topics.
  • Provide general legal advice and support to the Sales, Marketing, R&D, Finance, Benefits, Facilities, Internal Audit and Corporate Development departments.
  • Participate in strategic projects, as required.
The ideal candidate will have :
  • Legal qualifications in any Australian state/territory with current practising certificate.
  • Min 3 years up to 6 years relevant experience preferably with a large firm or other multinational in-house legal team.
  • Prior experience in the telecommunications industry is preferred but not essential.

  • Significant experience in drafting and negotiating a wide variety of commercial agreements, preferably in several jurisdictions in Asia.
  • Experience in the IT / Telco industry strongly preferred.
  • Fluent in English and able to review, negotiate and draft contracts in English.
  • Proficiency in one another Asian language an advantage.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills, with the ability to interact with and provide timely and effective advice to all levels of corporate stakeholders and customers.
  • Strong business acumen and analytical and organisational skills.
  • Good project management skills and the ability to project manage and/or work with multidisciplinary teams.
  • Ability to exercise good business judgment and make sound decisions.
  • Ability to interact successfully with customers and vendors.
  • Ability to work independently in a fast-paced environment and prioritise work flow based on the company’s business objectives and priorities.
