The Type 1 Diabetes Family Centre

Opened in 2015, the Type 1 Diabetes Family Centre supports children, young adults and adults with type 1 diabetes and the people who care about them. Our award-winning service is the first of its kind in Australia; every day we aim to change lives for the better for people diagnosed with type 1.

The Family Centre supports a network of more than 1750 families impacted by type 1 diabetes, helping them to face the challenges of the disease with confidence, and our reach and impact is rapidly growing. We offer ground-breaking education programs, supportive connections, inspirational role models, friendly allied healthcare, action packed events and family and adolescent camps to help people living with type 1 diabetes live without limits.

The Family Centre has a small team with a purposeful vision and mission, supported by an active and robust Board.

Being a Board Director at the Family Centre:

A member of the Family Centre’s Board of Directors is an integral part of the leadership team, providing direction, skills and vision to the Family Centre. He or she is responsible, together with the full board of directors, for governance and oversight of all aspects of the Family Centre and for promoting the mission of the organisation.

The Family Centre is a company limited by guarantee. We have 6 Board Directors, 6 paid staff, and an annual turnover of approximately $1 million.


Areas of Expertise Being Sought:


Essential: Knowledge and experience of type 1 diabetesand an understanding of the community and non-profit sectors.


Additionally, 1-2 of the following:

o Law/Policy

o Business Development

o Strategy

o Fundraising

o Media/Public Relations/Government Relations

o Marketing/Branding

Requirements:

· Commitment to the mission and direction of the Family Centre and ability to generate agreement on and action towards future goals of the organisation

· A developed understanding of the roles and responsibilities of not–for-profit governance and management.

· Internally, the ability to build collegial working relationships that contribute to consensus, and externally, a commitment to being a positive ambassador for the Family Centre

· Capacity and willingness to make appropriate introductions and connections to relevant networks

· Willingness to commit the necessary time to the Family Centre, including staying informed about matters relevant to the organisation and Board, being available and prepared for meetings, and reviewing and commenting on minutes and reports

· Commitment to the financial wellbeing of the Family Centre, including participation in fundraising events, participation in the development of future funding models, and actively identifying and securing the financial resources and partnerships necessary for the organization to advance its mission


Personal attributes:

· Strong knowledge of/personal experience with type 1 diabetes

· An ability to see the big picture

· Good communication skills

· An openness to difference and an appreciation of diversity

· The ability to think strategically

· A sense of humour


Time commitment:

Board members are appointed for 12 month terms.

Duties include:

· Attendance at meetings of the board of directors (held every two months during the day)

· Participation in fundraising events or other major organisational events

· Other meetings and projects as required


Remuneration: This is a volunteer position


Location: This position is open to residents of Western Australia only.
