About the branch and role

We are currently looking for an experienced lawyer to join the VGSO as a Senior Solicitor in our Police Advisory Branch.

The Police Advisory Branch provides legal services, strategic advice and representation to the Chief Commissioner of Police and, by extension, all Victoria Police personnel across the State. The branch is involved in a diverse range of matters, including but not limited to:

  • Criminal law, police duties, powers and responsibilities;
  • Statutory interpretation, criminal disclosure obligations and subpoenas;
  • Administrative law, privacy and information sharing;
  • Forensic procedures and intervention order applications; and
  • Summary prosecutions and emergency management.

The majority of the successful candidate's case load will be proceedings in the Court of Appeal.

About the successful candidate

The ideal candidate will have demonstrated experience providing oral and written advice, carrying out complex legal research and analysis, advocating in various jurisdictions, working collaboratively in a team, mentoring/developing junior staff and building positive relationships with stakeholders.

You will have demonstrated experience working on complex litigation and contributing to the strategic direction, whilst navigating tight timeframes.

Applicants should have an understanding or willingness to learn about the principles and practice of law in the following areas:

  • Police powers, duties and responsibilities;
  • Administrative law and public interest immunity claims; and
  • Discipline and integrity, privacy and information sharing.

Please note a requirement of this role is holding a Baseline, Negative Vetting 1 or Negative Vetting 2 security clearance or be willing to obtain one.
