As a Project Manager responsible for Satellite Access Node (SAN) deployment (client-side), you will be challenged to think strategically and lead tactically as we deploy the latest satellite communications network for Viasat-3. The role will be responsible for ensuring the successful completion of the Site Acquisition, Environmental, Design (SAED) and Regulatory including Civil Site Make Ready (SMR) works and commissioning of the SAN deployment program. Key accountabilities of the role include but not limited to budget, supplier, commercial, quality, schedule, and risk management. The Project Manager will be encouraged to work closely with other internal teams including PMO to track metrics for program performance, provide analysis and management of the critical paths and events on the program. This will include producing high-level schedules for both internal and external customers for any risk and issues including the development of any recovery plans.

Additionally, you will be required to work collaboratively with other Project Manager(s) of other segments of work for the most economic outcome whilst managing suppliers to deliver to their contractual obligations. Additional responsibilities include being tasked with reporting strategic key performance indicators of program progress as well as tactical schedule alignment.

The work involves oversight of the end-to-end phases from site selection, SAED, and deployment of satellite access nodes distributed across Australia in support of Viasat's next-generation satellite gateways. The ideal candidate will have deep and recent experience with end-to-end management of large-scale satellite earth station, cellular or fiber-optic deployment projects. The ability to demonstrate strong project controls for multiple locations and multi-million-dollar design-build projects are also important aspects of this role.

Job Responsibilities

  • Manage both internal shared resources, suppliers, and subcontractors in the evaluation of candidate sites.
  • Monitor progress and report on any key issues, slippage, and risk on regulatory activities including zoning, permitting, and entitlements during the SAED phase
  • Support all phases of Architectural & Engineering activities including constructability review during site selection and detailed design review
  • Monitor resource capacity and throughput to assist in resource management during project delivery phases including coordinating training needs and plans
  • Forecast project completion costs based on trends including productivity measurements, commitments, scope changes, schedule impacts, equipment cost variance, contract changes, and invoice payments.
  • Compare forecast versus actual performance and contribute to the analysis and explanation of variances including developing action plans to mitigate costs and schedule delays.
  • Supported by the PMO team, assist in the establishment of quality assurance process and procedures to ensure adherence to the defined quality standards
  • Supported by the PMO team, assist in the establishment of an acceptance and completion process and procedures to formalize acceptance and project closure.
  • Compile and/or review weekly or monthly governance reports to communicate achievements, performance, efficiency, and escalations to project stakeholders.
  • Prepare reports related to cost and scheduling as required.
  • Ability to understand technical issues and assist in minor technical troubleshooting and quality control issues.
  • Ability to identify and assess any variations to scope, budget, and schedule estimate as they arise throughout the project delivery phases
  • Ability to handle technical, commercial, and organizational challenges and effectively communicate complex tasks associated with commissioning and integration of satellite earth stations
  • Review and work collaboratively with delivery partners upon receipt of site acceptance artifacts to ensure the site is built to the required standards
  • Perform project administrative tasks and develop inputs for project cost estimating, budgeting, and scheduling to include purchase requisition development, purchase authorizations issuance, site-specific scopes of work development, invoice reconciliation, and project finance and accounting reconciliations.

  • 5+ years of relevant project controls experience in wireless site deployment with a fundamental understanding of the following site deployment competencies: acquisition, zoning, regulatory, architecture and engineering, construction, integration.
  • Experience working with Structural, Electrical, RF Engineers, and Civil contractors
  • Consistent track record of technical lead in procurement activities such as RFI/RFP and leading design and deployment contractors on similar network roll-out deployments
  • Must be proficient in Microsoft Excel with advanced skills in formulas, functions, and data visualization
  • Strong communication skills, interpersonal, presentation, influencing, and management skills
  • Ability to work independently on multiple projects, within a virtual team environment, with opposing priorities and tight deadlines.
  • Strong working knowledge of project control functions and processes including planning/scheduling, cost estimating and cost control, risk and opportunity management, change management, financial and project accounting process, and systems.
  • MPM and Oracle experience.
  • Sitetracker experience is desirable
  • Australian Citizenship or Permanent Residence required.
  • Up to 50% overnight travel required. Extended hours as required
  • Bachelor's degree in business, finance, or engineering
  • PMP certification or equivalent
