  • Full time, 12-month temporary contract available
  • Located at the Elizabeth Macarthur Agricultural Institute, Menangle

The Department of Regional NSW was formed in 2020 as a central agency for regional issues. The Department is responsible for building resilient regional economies and communities, strengthening primary industries, managing the use of regional land, overseeing the state’s mineral and mining resources and ensuring government investment in regional NSW is fair and delivers positive outcomes for local communities and businesses.

The NSW Department of Primary Industries (NSW DPI) supports the development of profitable primary industries that create a more prosperous NSW and contributes to a better environment through the sustainable use of natural resources.

Within NSW DPI, the Biosecurity & Food Safety Division is responsible for effective management and risk minimisation of biosecurity threats to NSW as well as the through-chain regulation of food safety. It delivers a risk based approach to policy and compliance, and provides regional engagement and coordination in response to emergency incidents and natural disasters impacting primary industries and the food sector.

About the role:

The successful applicant will be responsible for the following:

  • Undertaking research and development to deliver improved DNA-based methods for veterinary and plant health applications
  • Identifying technical developments to continually improve the efficiency and effectiveness of laboratory performance 
  • Analysing and interpreting genetic datasets (sequencing, genotyping, phylogenetics)
  • Promote and maintain a safe work culture in the laboratory

About You:

To be successful in this role, applicants will need to demonstrate:

  • A degree qualification in Environmental Science, Agricultural Science, Veterinary Science or a related field
  • Experience with nucleic acid technologies (DNA extraction, PCR, sequencing, genotyping)
  • Experience with the analysis and interpretation of genetic datasets
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • A dedication to teamwork and able to work independently
  • Competence with electronic systems for data entry, analysis and sample management
  • Resilience in dealing with shifting caseloads and working to tight deadlines in an accredited laboratory

Please note: The salary range for this position is commensurate with qualifications, skills and experience, as outlined in the Crown Employees (Department of Industry, Skills and Regional Development) Professional Officers Award and the NSW DPI Professional Officer Progression Criteria) plus superannuation.
