An exciting opportunity for an entrepreneurial technologist to join a team finding and investing in the best technology originating from Australia and New Zealand’s leading academic institutions, and building it into the next generation of technology companies that will change the world.

Early stage investment provides the foundation for the next generation of innovative technology companies. The IP Group team identifies, funds and builds these companies alongside ambitious inventors and entrepreneurs. From the jet engine to fibre optic communications and from liquid crystal displays to medical ultrasound, some of the most well-known disruptive technologies of the past century have roots in the research labs of universities.

The IP Group team is “shaping the future” by investing in and commercialising inventions derived from our partner institutions in Australia and New Zealand in fields ranging from advanced materials, the various disciplines of chemical, mechanical, electrical and electronic engineering and information and communications technologies, including both hardware and software.

THE ROLE

This is an outstanding opportunity for an analyst to join a growing investment team and help identify, shape and build the next generation of disruptive companies.

Title: Investment Analyst - Physical Sciences

Location: Melbourne, Australia

This is a permanent, full-time role reporting to the Head of Physical Sciences in Australia

Key Responsibilities:

We are seeking an entrepreneurial, technically qualified individual with ‘hands on’ experience of developing technology in a commercial context. You will identify great original science with the potential to solve the world’s most intractable challenges and work with the inventors and entrepreneurs to build a company to deliver on this promise. More specifically, you will:


  • Work with universities and academics to identify science and technologies that have commercial potential
  • Assess a technology’s competitive positioning and make assessments of market and investor potential
  • Work with the university tech transfer teams to ensure Intellectual Property is properly protected
  • Define business propositions to support the development of an innovation, identify potential partners and investors and draft robust business plans
  • Provide hands-on assistance, in the form of project management services, to the management teams of spin-out companies
  • Prepare due diligence documentation; and
  • Liaise with professional advisors and build relationships with potential investors, including VCs, business angels and government funding bodies


Skills and Experience:

  • Strong technical background in a physical science discipline
  • Commercial/corporate experience gained in some/any of the following:
  • Technology Transfer
  • Start-up company
  • Strategic consulting
  • Venture capital
  • Drive and resilience to dive into and understand new technical and commercial domains
  • An ability to articulate complex ideas in a clear and concise way and always striving to get to the “truth”
