SmartestEnergy Australia is a start-up energy business in the NEM region.


Role Purpose

Reporting to the Vice President Trading, the Head of Trading Operations (“HoTO”) is responsible for managing all operations related to the trading department that includes contract management, short-term optimization through optimization and bidding, and the operational running of retail pricing and customer activities.

As a start-up, you will also be involved in helping establish the foundation for SmartestEnergy’s energy retail and trading business in Australia. This may involve developing policies, procedures, and processes, helping develop the framework for our new retail and trading systems, continuous improvements, establishing agreements with key industry parties, or developing the structure for new reports.


Key Responsibilities

  • Trading Operations – Manage and take ownership of the effective and efficient delivery for the trading department's operational activities, including operating a portfolio of physical assets and derivatives and ensuring compliance to relevant regulatory requirements.
  • Portfolio Optimisation – Short-term optimisation, nominations, and dispatch of physical assets under contract with SmartestEnergy such that revenue is maximised for SmartestEnergy and its end Customers.
  • Contract Management – Responsible for monitoring, complying with, and settling each wholesale and financial contract related to SmartestEnergy portfolio of transactions.
  • Retail Pricing Desk – Manage the operation of the pricing of the wholesale energy component of retail energy, providing timely and accurate prices as a service to the Retail Sales teams. The responsibility includes the ownership of the data that forms pricing and forms trading positions. Additionally, as and when SmartestEnergy forms the relevant products, setting up and operating a customer transaction desk for route to market (progressive) retail agreements.
  • Business Development Support - Support the business development teams in securing new and renewed deals or conceptual framework with C&I customers, generators, and other retailers from ideation through operational implementation and effective settlement processes.
  • Stakeholder Management – Report to senior management meetings as required on commercial performance and portfolio risks. Represent SmartestEnergy externally in high value client meetings.
  • Supporting the Group – Provide support to the company with expertise, knowledge, and skills to ensure group and company objectives are met.

Performance Indicators

  • Delivery of gross margin related to short term trading targets.
  • Minimal operational errors related to operational execution and data entry across
  • Performance of internal SLA with Retail Sales and other teams as relevant
  • Cost to Settlement being the costs to manage the allocated processes against delivery of gross margin.
  • Compliance with all relevant regulatory rules and requirements
  • Company NPS and eNPS scores

Experience

  • Extensive experience of wholesale energy markets and trading gained through a front office position at a utility, energy trading house, bank, or similar institution.
  • Extensive experience of managing the day-to-day operations of energy market positions, bidding, and wholesale transfer pricing to Retail.
  • Track record of successfully operating an energy portfolio of a number of contractual assets within regulatory compliance and in a profitable manner.
  • Experience of energy at an operational level and familiarity with regulation and compliance in the wholesale National Electricity Market (NEM).

Knowledge

  • Extensive understanding of the participants and commercial arrangements in the Australian NEM energy market, covering generation, wholesale trading, retail.
  • Extensive knowledge of structured energy trading instruments (e.g., structured trading, options, swaps).
