Who we are

Public Works Advisory (PWA) is part of the Department of Regional NSW. PWA supports local and state government agencies to deliver critical infrastructure initiatives by providing expert advisory, planning, delivery and support services. We bridge the gap between the government and the private sector, helping clients to maximise value, optimise costs and manage risks in their infrastructure programs and the lifecycle management of their assets. These services are built on a solid foundation of more than 160 years of effective delivery and management of critical infrastructure projects for the State of NSW.

About the role

The Finance Manager/Business Analyst provides commercial support and advice to PWA Hunter New England management. The role works closely with Project Managers across all facets of project delivery including fee calculation, project tracking and analysis, cash flow, billing, debtor management and contractor payment.

The role is responsible for, but not limited to:

  • Lead and direct a team of 4 finance professionals
  • Preparing and modelling forward estimates, analysing commercial risks and opportunities and identifying strategies consistent with business goals and objectives.
  • Develop and prepare management reports, analyse financial performance (including benchmarking against agreed performance metrics) and make recommendations that promote sustainable commercial performance.
  • Prepare year end financial accounts including all reconciliations and reports for the Hunter New England business unit.
  • Maintain productive business relationships with stakeholders, including shared service providers.
  • Provide commercial advice to Senior Management and Project Managers when pricing proposals, progressively reviewing project performance, client and service type profitability and internal controls
  • Ensure compliance and consistency with Departmental financial policy and procedures, financial legislative requirements (including Public Finance and Audit Act/Auditor-General) and Australian Accounting Standards.

About you

We are seeking a highly motivated, qualified accountant with experience in the building project management or building construction industry. Of importance are:

  • a client- focussed and flexible approach;
  • clear and concise verbal and written communication skills;
  • Extensive experience in mainframe accounting systems together with advanced excel skills (SAP financial experience highly regarded); and
  • a proactive and improvement- orientated attitude
