An exciting opportunity exists to join the work of the Vision Impairment portfolio in the Disability and Inclusion Branch, State Schools Division, Department of Education, based at Narbethong State Special School. The Statewide Vision Impairment Services team builds the capability and confidence of school leaders, teachers and specialist staff to improve the educational achievement of students who have vision impairment, including through the production of alternative format materials and provision of specialised resources. Applications are sought from flexible and organised individuals to join the team. This temporary part-time role consists of 21.75 hours per week, 3 days a week.

Your Role

As the Administration Officer (Braille and Alternative Formats) - Statewide Vision Impairment Services, you will have responsibility for the following:

Perform general library duties including utilising the Oliver Library software to catalogue all materials produced, processing requests and returns, barcoding, organising mail and maintaining equipment and materials.
Understand and comply with licencing agreements and copyright laws for publishers/borrowers.
Liaise with outside agencies, publishers and schools, and provide support to school personnel regarding the production of alternative formal learning materials.
Use specialised software and hardware for production of learning materials including Duxbury, Microsoft and Adobe programs, Braille embossers, printers, scanners, and the Pictures In A Flash (PIAF) machine.
Produce resources in alternative formats including large print, audio, digital and tactile, and convert print diagrams, graphs and maps into tactile diagrams using graphic programs for production.
Produce tactile kits for early learners taking direction from the Alternative Format Library Head of Department and develop an understanding of tactile discrimination and how to represent concepts tactually in a meaningful way for learners with vision impairment.
Translate curriculum resources into braille using Duxbury translation software.
Understand and maintain a high level of specialised knowledge of Unified English Braille (UEB) literary code, as well as additional technical braille codes for mathematics, science, foreign languages, music and ICT notation.
Proof read and edit braille translated materials and files.

Tasks may change so flexibility will be highly regarded in the successful candidate.

The duration of this position will be dependent on work demands and resourcing model allocation.

Ideally, applicants for this position must possess, or be willing to undertake, appropriate training/proficiency testing to obtain a Trans-Tasman Certificate of Proficiency in Unified English Braille (the braille code used in Australia and other English speaking countries).

When working in regulated employment an employee must have a current Working with Children Clearance (blue card) issued by Blue Card Services.
