Queensland’s comprehensive legislative approach to safeguarding people with disability is unique and the most complex and comprehensive among Australian jurisdictions.

The Work Of The Positive Behaviour Support And Restrictive Practices Team Is Guided By The Disability Services Act 2006 And The Guardianship And Administration Act (2000) And Includes

  • authorising the short term use of restrictive practices for adults with a disability who display challenging behaviours which may cause harm to themselves or others
  • developing Positive Behaviour Support Plans (PBSPs) for a range of clients including those subject to the restrictive practices of containment and/or seclusion and all PBSPs for clients residing in the Queensland Government’s Accommodation Services and Respite Services (AS&RS).
The Director is responsible for managing a team of clinicians who administer the statutory delegations of the Disability Services Act 2006 in relation to the use of restrictive practices. You will work with the Executive Director to ensure clinical resources are managed in a flexible manner to respond to changing priorities and circumstances, while ensuring decisions are made consistently and in line with the relevant legislation to achieve positive outcomes for clients and stakeholders.

The role also provides effective, contemporary and evidence-based clinical advice and support to the clinical team in regard to positive behaviour support and restrictive practices. In conjunction with the Executive Director, you will supervise the clinical work of the state-wide team and strategically contribute to the continuous improvement of the quality of the department's responses to clients and stakeholders. The position also provides clinical advice and training to AS&RS management and staff to support compliance with the Disability Services Act 2006 in relation to the use of restrictive practices.

The role liaises on a regular basis with a range of significant stakeholders including the NDIS Quality and Safeguards Commission, the Office of the Public Guardian and the Queensland Civil and Administrative Tribunal in the delivery of Queensland's restrictive practices authorisation activities.

In addition, the position may be required to lead the provision of other safeguarding strategies for people with disability such as driving the resolution and escalation of client issues and working with the NDIS Quality and Safeguards Commission to ensure safe service environments are available for NDIS participants.
