Immediate start for a Legal Counsel position in a State Government department


Your new company
Are an established state government department that are passionate about ensuring the safety of the Victorian public. This 12 month FTC role is available immediately.

Your new role
Reporting to the Assistant General Counsel; this role is responsible for leading a team of legal professionals. Your day to day activities will include:

  • Review and prepare decisions under the Freedom of Information Act within statutory time limits
  • Manage the performance of the team, by ensuring outcomes are reported to relevant internal stakeholders in a timely manner
  • Provide regular reports on the team’s performance and progress to the General Counsel
  • Proactively support Assistant General Counsel to shape operational strategy and deliver legal services initiatives
  • Ensure ongoing development and implementation of best practise and contemporary policies, practises and reporting measures to drive an agenda of continuous improvement
  • Build internal professional competency and develop the capability of the team through on going performance planning and skills development

What you'll need to succeed
To succeed in this position the successful candidate will have:
  • 7+ years PAE
  • Current Victorian Legal Practising Certificate
  • Sound understanding of FOI, privacy and administrative law
  • Experience advising on complex matters of statutory interpretation
  • Demonstrated leadership skills and extensive experience in negotiation and risk management skills
  • Demonstrated ability to coach and mentor other team members in an engaging manner
