The Social Worker in Older Persons Mental Health Service (OPMHS) of Southern Mental Health works in a dual role between the Community and Inpatient Mental Health Teams. Working as part of a multidisciplinary team the Social Worker contributes to consumers recovery, improved social functioning and affect a positive return to the community by delivering a range of clinical activities including mental health assessment, care planning, clinical review, psychosocial assessment, crisis management, clinical care coordination, advocacy and specialised therapy programs.

The Social Worker works collaboratively with the consumer and families/carers as well as liaising closely with a network of key stake holders, these may include - veteran and community mental health services and other government and non-government organisations.

To be successful in the role you must have the ability to provide core social work skills including psychosocial assessment, counselling, individual and group work, relationship and family interventions, crisis intervention and brief therapy. Highly motivated with the ability to engage with consumers who have very high service needs, you will undertake comprehensive assessment skills including consumer needs analysis, assessment skills in mental state and risk assessment. You will possess the ability to understand the value systems and cultural differences of people from diverse backgrounds. Managing your time effectively and efficiently, you will have effective written and verbal communication skills and the ability to express complex ideas succinctly and logically. Committed to engage in supervision and ongoing professional development, you will be able to work under limited supervision and exercise more autonomy.

You will hold an appropriate degree or equivalent qualification which gives eligibility for full membership of the Australian Association of Social Workers.

Appointment will be subject to a satisfactory Criminal History Check.
