Design Practice Lead/Senior UX Lead


Small Multiples is looking for a Design Practice Lead with a great approach to designing for online experiences.

Small Multiples is a data visualisation company based in Surry Hills. You'll be joining a multidisciplinary team who work on data visualisation projects, using data to inform, engage, and help people make decisions. Things you'll be doing:

Defining the process includes:

  • Defining and refining the company’s design service offerings
  • Mentoring and training the UX and design team to improve quality and efficiency
  • Keeping up to date with good UX and design practices through self-directed learning, as well as training opportunities through work
  • Identify new opportunities in the UX field and develop new skills with the team.

Putting the process into practice includes:

  • Leadership and support for the design and engineering teams in delivering client projects
  • Leadership and support for the company’s R&D and product development initiatives
  • Planning, completing, and interpreting user and stakeholder research
  • Doing comparative analysis for projects, sketching and brainstorming ideas
  • Creating low-fi, high-fi and interactive wireframes
  • Using data to help you understand a project and prototype
  • Validating ideas through user testing.

Advocating includes:

  • Running talks and workshops for potential customers, speak at conferences, and provide training (through universities and commercial providers such as General Assembly)
  • Attending client meetings to explain UX processes and design decisions made
  • Supporting the sales and pitching process through attending meetings and helping to prepare proposals.


Skills/experience:

  • Must have at least 4 years of experience in a mid-to senior role, with over 8 years of UX experience.
  • Understanding of processes and approaches to user interface design
  • Experience with online design and responsive design
  • Some theoretical background, eg: studies in HCI, interface design, UX
  • Portfolio required showing, for example: sketches, wireframes, user flows, comparative analysis, interface design, interface prototypes
  • Strong communication skills


Bonus experience:

  • Data manipulation skills (eg: Excel, R, Tableau)
  • Coding experience (eg: to produce interactive prototypes)
  • Understanding of mapping tools like QGIS, Carto, Mapbox, GoogleMyMaps etc.
  • Data visualisation background.


Details of the role:

  • Must be an Australian Citizen
  • 5 days a week, with flexibility between working from home and in the office
  • Start with 6 month contract, looking to move to permanent basis in future 
  • You'll be working with a dedicated team of datavis specialists, UX/UI designers and developers
  • Focused but relaxed and social office in Surry Hills, minutes walk from Central, cafés, lunch spots.


Salary

  • $130-150k depending on experience.
