Legal Counsel

  • This role would suit a lawyer that has experience in one or more of the following areas: commercial or financial services litigation, superannuation, professional indemnity insurance, financial services and general corporate & commercial law.

We will count on you to:

  • Provide legal support to Mercer’s financial services business with an emphasis on legal advice in relation to errors and omissions (E&Os), claims and disputes
  • Assist the business with investigations in relation to E&Os and provide advice on liability, mitigation, remediation plans, member communication and the ability to seek reimbursement from Mercer’s professional indemnity insurance
  • Provide legal support in relation to responding to regulatory investigations or enquiries
  • Provide legal advice in relation to defending disputed death or disablement benefit claims in conjunction with insurers and external firms
  • Be able to clearly articulate and educate business colleagues on key legal issues and developments and on dispute avoidance
  • Provide legal support to all Pacific products and services with an emphasis on legal research and recommendations to Senior team members on all aspects of superannuation, investment, administration and distribution of Mercer’s products and services
  • Provide legal support in the preparation of non-disclosure agreements, service contracts, settlement agreements and other legal documents
  • Keep abreast of legislative and case-law developments in relevant subject areas

What you need to have:
  • Experience obtained in a reputable legal practice and/or a hands on in-house role focusing on one or more of the following:
    • Commercial and/or Insurance Litigation
    • Superannuation
    • Financial Services
    • Professional indemnity insurance and claims assessment
    • Corporate and commercial law
    • Admission as legal practitioner in Australian jurisdiction
    • Excellent interpersonal skills, including ability to communicate and relate to internal clients and stakeholders at all levels
    • Strategic thinker and ability to apply risk management principles
    • Ability to analyse and communicate complex matters in a commercially sensible way
    • Ability to work to tight deadlines
    • Accuracy and attention to detail
    • Genuine team player
