The Nyrstar Hobart smelter is one of the world’s largest zinc smelters in terms of production volume, focusing on high-value added products for export primarily to Asia. The Nyrstar Hobart smelter has been part of the Hobart community for more than 100 years.

We are looking for reliable team players with the commitment and motivation to work towards a rewarding career as a production operator at Nyrstar Hobart's Zinc Smelter.

Operators are the heart and soul of the Zinc Works, and without them, we wouldn’t be able to supply one of the most versatile and in-demand metals in the world.

Over 2 years, you’ll complete a nationally recognised Certificate II in Process Plant Operations, gaining the practical and theoretical skills you need to help safely and effectively meet production and organisational goals. All that you need to be successful in this traineeship is self-discipline, maturity, strong communication skills, and drive. Bring us a great attitude, and we'll give you tools and support to start along a promising career path.

While there is no guarantee of employment at the end of the traineeship, the intention is that you will be skilled to work operating and monitoring processes and equipment in a production department. This traineeship could be your first step towards a leadership role in a global business.


  • Learn and follow Nyrstar’s Standard Operating Procedures (SOP’s).
  • You’ll be required to diligently comply with strict safety and environmental standards and legislative requirements, as well as multiple internal policies, procedures, licenses and permit systems.
  • Work a 4/4 rotating shift roster of 2x12 hour day shifts, 2x12 hour night shifts, and 4 days off.
  • Achieve learning outcomes within set time frames.
  • Show behaviour that respects the contributions, perspectives, and wellbeing of others.


  • Excellent communications skills, particularly the ability to safely understand and follow instructions.
  • The aptitude to quickly retain and apply knowledge and processes.
  • The ability to commit to a set shift roster, including night shifts, weekends, and public holidays.
  • A growth mindset and a proactive approach to learning.
  • Reliable transport and preferably a driver's license, as there’s no public transport to site.
