Forensicare’s Prison Mental Health Services are currently comprised of the following services provided under a Funding and Healthcare Services Agreement with Justice Health:

  • Melbourne Assessment Prison - a 16-bed Acute Assessment Unit, specialist clinics, outpatient services, reception and at risk assessment program;
  • Dame Phyllis Frost Centre – Marrmak a 20-bed mental health residential program, outreach support and therapeutic day program for women; reception and at risk assessment program
  • Metropolitan Remand Centre – the Mobile Forensic Mental Health Service – mental health assessment, psychological intervention, mental health case management and transitions/pre-release planning for prisoners on remand with severe impaired mental functioning. Reception assesment program and post reception services.
  • Consultant psychiatric services and Nurse Practitioner services to the larger state-managed prisons;
  • Satellite psychology services at Barwon prison, Kareenga and Marngoneet Correctional Centre
  • Forensicare deliver comprehensive forensic mental health (FMH) services at the Ravenall Correctional Centre, as a sub-contractor to the GEO group. The FMH services comprises of a bed based service for 75 prisoners and a large outpatients program. Over 100 Forensicare clinical and corporate support staff are located at the new prison.
  • Forensicare provide specialist mental health services at Port Phillip Prison as a sub-contractor to G4S Correctional Services, operating a 30-bed psychosocial rehabilitation unit and a mental health outpatients program.

About the role:

The Nurse Practitioner Candidate (NPC) undertakes a program of education and advanced nursing practice development leading to endorsement by NBV as a Nurse Practitioner. The NPC practices with increasing autonomy within an interdisciplinary framework to maximise access to expert mental health nursing care to promote recovery and optimum outcomes for prisoners experiencing mental illness.

Duties:

  • Conducts advanced, comprehensive and holistic mental health and risk assessment and management to prisons.
  • Delivers advanced clinical mental health nursing interventions including suicide prevention, co-morbidity, crisis intervention and dual diagnosis interventions.
  • Identifying patients with a mental illness and co-occurring acquired brain injury and/or dual diagnosis.
  • For case managed patients, develops and evaluates comprehensive mental health recovery plans that are collaborative, evidence based and informed by specialist knowledge.
  • Undertakes suicide risk assessment of referred prisoners and develops risk management plans in consultation with the interdisciplinary justice and health team members.

Skills and experience:

  • Extensive and advanced clinical knowledge and at least five years of experience in mental health nursing.
  • Ability to complete the required Master level qualification recognised by the Nurses Board Victoria.
  • Demonstrated ability to undertake comprehensive mental health and risk assessments and to plan, implement and evaluate interventions.
  • Preferably knowledge and experience of nursing in a prison environment.

Mandatory qualifications & registrations:

  • Postgraduate qualification in Mental Health Nursing or equivalent
  • Registration with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulations Agency (AHPRA)
