About us

The Office of the General Counsel (“OGC”) is responsible for providing in-house legal services across the Department of Justice and Community Safety (“DJCS”), including advice on significant commercial transactions and major projects as well as constitutional, public law and administrative matters and litigation. OGC also supports the Attorney-General in her role as First Law Officer.

The Transactions team within the OGC leads the delivery of legal services on commercial transactions and projects for DJCS, including IT, construction and significant commercial projects.

About the role

The Legal Adviser – Transactions will be a member of this team and must possess a proven ability to provide sophisticated, authoritative and concise advice on complex legal matters arising in the operation of government in commercial transactions and projects. This will include complex commercial, infrastructure, IT, construction and project related transactions.

Your key accountability will include:

  • Provide solutions-based legal and policy advice, both individually and as part of a team of solicitors
  • Contribute to multiple complex and sensitive matters
  • Undertake legal research and analysis
  • Prepare legal documentation and draft complex reports, briefs and Ministerial and other correspondence as required
  • Support and work collaboratively with the executive and leadership team
  • Develop close, effective and candid relationships with other DJCS groups as well as other departments, agencies and stakeholders
  • Contribute to a positive work environment
  • Perform other tasks as requested.

You will have the ability to work across the broader OGC team, including matters outside the Transactions team.

About you

We are looking for lawyers to provide sophisticated, authoritative, concise, and solutions-focused advice in commercial transactions and projects including in relation to any of:

  • general commercial law advice
  • infrastructure, construction and project related transactions
  • procurement, including information and communications technology procurement.

As our successful candidate, you will have/be:

  • technical legal skills with the ability to analyse complex operational, policy and legal issues, interpret legislation and develop accurate legal solutions, proactively seeking supervision where required.
  • experience in providing legal advice in relation to commercial transactions or infrastructure projects.
  • experience in, or knowledge of, Victorian government and Cabinet processes
  • excellence written and verbal communication skills
  • exceptional stakeholder management skills with the ability to influence and negotiate
  • a strategic planner and problem solver with conceptual and analytical abilities
  • proactive, accountable and empathetic.

The incumbent must be admitted, or eligible to be admitted, to practice as a legal practitioner in Victoria.
