Known as the “Gladstone Capital Projects”, seconded services will be offered to Rio Tinto Alumina to assist with strategic Gladstone capital projects and Brisbane office services. Bechtel has history with both greenfield formation and brownfield expansion of the Yarwun Alumina Refinery, along with Special Project initiatives. In a similar manner, over time, QAL has been assisted by Bechtel through directed in-plant services support.

These placements will assist with meeting timeframe delivery, contractor management, and capital project management within the Yarwun Alumina Refinery and Queensland Alumina Refinery (QAL) facilities. These placements will work alongside existing shutdown teams and maintenance activities to focus on safely executing specific capital projects.


Superintendent II is assigned to a field construction organization in a supervisory capacity - – capital projects being undertaken at an existing alumina refinery facility.

Responsible for supervising and directing operations of assigned capital projects or within assigned discipline or area. This role will be a spectrum of brownfield and “ring-fenced” greenfield projects with some complexity within an existing operational alumina refinery. It includes directing the building, civil, SMP, and E&I contractors and subcontractors, subordinate supervisors and others, as assigned.

This position reports to the Site Superintendent.

Supervises and directs subordinate superintendents and others, as assigned. Ensures assigned construction operations and subcontractors performance are in compliance for all disciplines in all areas, with specifications and within schedules and budgets. Performs general functions inherent in all supervisory field positions.

Typically possesses an applicable technical degree or certification and/ or has the requisite broad work experience in one or more of the disciplinary areas, with construction supervision experience essential. Experience with brownfield capital projects in alumina refinery environments and knowledge of Queensland regulations is an advantage towards your application.


1. Ensures that Bechtel and local/national safety codes, requirements and standards are being complied with within assigned area of responsibility. Ensures the Zero Accident Philosophy is incorporated into every aspect of construction operations. Actively participates in scheduled safety meetings.

2. Responsible for field construction operations of assigned capital projects and / or within assigned discipline or area.

3. Determines workforce support requirements. Coordinates established area operational plans. Schedules work to be performed and reviews work accomplished by each relevant Contractor / Supplier. craft. Monitors work activities and ensures the quality of work performed.

4. Ensures the most current design document is used to complete the work and that all design changes are approved prior to implementation.

5. Approves craft time records using established automated tools.

6. Prepares reports and forecasts, including summary of construction progress, craft personnel forecasts, and expenditures forecast.

7. Monitors heavy equipment tool usage on the site. Prepares Field Material Requisitions for tools and consumables and ensures that the crafts have the tools they require to be productive.

8. Monitors the activities of Contractors to ensure compliance with specifications and schedules.

9. Responsible for the implementation of corporate/project policies, procedures and instructions within assigned operations.

10. Coordinates activities with other disciplines or areas and clients’ resident representatives, as instructed by the Site Superintendent construction management.

11. Where applicable, performs employee reviews and identifies training and development opportunities for subordinate personnel.

12. Implements Six Sigma tools, analysis, and decision making in the execution of duties.


1. Demonstrated commitment to Environment, Safety and Health (ES&H). Demonstrable commitment to a Zero Accident safety program. Superintendent II is to be aware of ES&H requirements within Bechtel, Client organization, and to Queensland Regulations.

2. Knowledge of Bechtel’s Zero Accident Philosophy.

3. Knowledge of the Project ES&H Handbook, the Supervisors ES&H Manual, the Project Safety Management Plan and the Bechtel Core Processes.

4. Knowledge of the Six Sigma program tools and methodologies.

5. The requisite level of capability is normally acquired through a minimum of 10 years in demonstrated capacity – along with:

  • A recognized degree from an accredited college or university providing a recognized technical degree or certification or in lieu,
  • A sufficient number of specialized courses with recognised prior practical work experience in construction.

6. Knowledge of close client secondment interaction, EPCM contract supervision of Contractor(s) and their subcontractor’s responsibilities.

7. Knowledge of construction technologies; and knowledge of the use of subcontracts, and the contractor and subcontractor’s responsibilities contained in subcontract documents.

8. Knowledge of supervisory functions relating to field activities; with experience working with, supervising and administering subcontractors

9. Familiarity with current industry quality standards and Bechtel & Client specifications.

10. Extensive experience in construction of large projects, and able to support the administration of small to medium capital projects.

11. Excellent oral and written communication skills

12. Demonstrated leadership in a team-based environment.

13. Knowledge of Standard Work Process Procedures (SWPPs).

14. Must be computer-literate in word processing, spreadsheet and database applications in accordance with current Bechtel Standard Application Program (BSAP) standards.

17. Proven customer relationship skills are essential, and Superintendent II is expected to represent Bechtel’s reputation and interests with the Client through performance excellence and delivery as promised.
