Position Objective

The role of the Teacher at Allambi is a unique position within our Learning Centre that provides flexible education options for vulnerable young people in out-of-home care.

The Teacher will be required to apply our alternate education model – Learning Without Walls philosophies into their teaching practice.

The role will require facilitation of programs to young people who have been disengaged from education for extended periods of time, young people who have been expelled, suspended or otherwise don’t have a suitable educational setting to attend.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

  • Manage a case load of young people and provide educational support to meet specific needs
  • Teach vulnerable young people who have experienced trauma, have a range of complex diagnosis and are academically and socially disadvantaged
  • Teach young people in various student to teacher ratios ranging from one-on-one to small groups
  • Implement a diverse range of teaching strategies that will cater for varied learning styles and cognitive abilities
  • Create individualised programs that cater for a diverse range of needs. These can include but are not limited to; Academic Programs, Interest-Based Projects, Life Skills, Social Skills etc
  • Coordinate and facilitate schoolwork via the students Distance Education school. This includes all communication with schools and facilitation of schoolwork
  • Ability to use initiative to “think outside of the box” when engaging with young people who are disengaged from education
  • Demonstrates excellence in managing challenging behaviours and crisis in line with Therapeutic Crisis Intervention (TCI) Model
  • Works collaboratively with key stakeholders to develop Individualised Education Plans (IEP) for all young people and facilitate and hold termly meetings
  • Conducts diagnostic testing in the areas of Literacy, Numeracy and Social and Emotional and accurately uses data to inform plans and programs
  • Prepares professionally written progress reports on academic and social and emotional growth
  • Complete anecdotal weekly case notes based on educational and behavioural progress
  • Demonstrate outstanding time management, verbal and written communication skills

Selection Criteria

  • Demonstrated experience in managing young people with challenging behaviours in a therapeutic manner
  • Experience in creating individualised or small group education programs for individuals who are disengaged or require intensive support. These can include but are not limited to; Academic Programs, Interest-Based Projects, Life Skill or Social Skill programs
  • Proven ability to use initiative to “think outside of the box” when engaging young people who are disengaged from education. Please provide an example of a scenario that has required you to use unconventional strategies to engage
  • Demonstrated experience working with young people who have experienced trauma and can make reasonable adjustments to their teaching style to include trauma informed practices
  • Proven ability to build connections with young people based on their strengths. Please provide an example of a scenario that required you to use this skill
  • Minimum of a Bachelor’s degree in Education or related field
