The Role

You will be involved in the provision of scientific analytical services to the racing industry which includes analysis of samples from licensed racing animals for the presence of prohibited substances, participation in RnD activities, maintaining and operating scientific equipment and complying with the NATA ISO 17025 accreditation requirements.

The period at this point will be for a period of 3-months with the possibility of extension. Based in Hamilton.

The laboratory undertakes high volume testing for thoroughbred, harness and greyhound racing in Queensland. Urine, plasma, oral fluids and other biological and non-biological samples are analysed for the presence of pharmaceuticals and non-pharmaceutical compounds of regulatory concern to the racing industry.

Key Duties and Accountabilities:

  • Undertake analytical activities to screen for and confirm the presence of drugs and prohibited substances in racing industry samples
  • Prepare scientific data associated with screening and confirmatory analysis incorporating effective use of the Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS), and present for quality review
  • Maintain and operate scientific equipment and develop a good working knowledge of the scientific principles that relate to analytical methods and procedures in accordance with Lab accreditations.
  • Comply with NATA/ISO 17025 accreditation requirements, including quality control procedures, assisting with preparation of procedures, completion of relevant statistics and ensuring that the biological and legal integrity of samples and analytical generated results meet forensic requirements.
  • Assist with the implementation of new testing instrumentation and methods where required.
  • Operate effectively as a member of the laboratory team to meet high throughput of sample analysis and sample numbers
  • Ensure all non-compliance issues are reported promptly

The Candidate

  • A Degree in science from a recognised tertiary institution with a focus in analytical chemistry, or other qualifications deemed equivalent
  • Have the ability and willingness to learn essential analytical and deductive skills necessary for succeeding in modern analytical chemistry.
  • Excellent communication skills both written and verbal
