Position Information

 About Mian school

Mian School is located in Dubbo, near the centre of town and can cater for up to 28 students in Years 5 to 9. Students access Mian School from primary and secondary schools in Dubbo and Narromine. Mian School has a high population of Aboriginal students. The majority of students come from low socio-economic backgrounds. Most students present with a diagnosed disability. Students are enrolled at Mian School through the placement panel process. Mian School's Family Occupation and Education Index (FOEI) is generally high and in 2020 it was 221. This is amongst the highest across NSW government schools. The majority of students, evidenced through school based assessments, are at least two years behind their cohort in literacy and numeracy. Every student at Mian School has a negotiated Personalised Learning Pathway. Students are provided with individualised adjustments to cater for their individual learning needs.

The Assistant Principal at Mian school (SSP) is responsible for coordinating student transition and collaborating with all stakeholders and coordination and leading the case management team for the complex case management of students in collaboration with the Principal. Teacher supervision would include feedback and reflective sessions with teaching staff in reviewing programs and registration documentation as well as personalised learning pathways documentation.


Selection Criteria

In addition to the general selection criteria, 

  1. Approval to teach special education and/or experience in teaching students with mild to moderate intellectual disabilities, challenging behaviours and students with a confirmation of disabilities.
  2. Experience and ability to work collaboratively with students, parents, staff and external agencies and feeder schools to develop, implement and evaluate quality transition programs.
  3. Demonstrated ability to effectively lead and develop a cohesive learning and support team in complex case management, connecting with a range of stakeholders to support the learning and wellbeing needs of all students and improve student outcomes.
  4. Demonstrated commitment to lead collaborative planning, monitoring and reviewing of teaching and learning programs.
  5. Demonstrated knowledge and evidence of implementing Department of Education policies and procedures to support and improve student learning and wellbeing.


General Selection Criteria

1. Successful teaching experience with capacity to initiate improvement in teaching, learning and classroom practice
2. Knowledge of curriculum, assessment and student welfare with the ability to lead and design quality, inclusive teaching and learning programs
3. Educational leadership skills to build the capacity and manage the performance of individuals and teams
4. Well developed communication and interpersonal skills with the capacity to build relationships and engage students, staff and parents
5. Ability to plan and manage resources effectively and equitably to support teaching and learning
6. Knowledge of and commitment to the Department's Aboriginal education policies
