Position summary:

Downer Defence Systems is seeking a Work Health and Safety Officer to assist in the the identification and management of Hazardous Substances and Hazardous Chemicals (HazChem) procured and used throughout the Defence community. The primary location for the delivery of services for this role is in NASPO located in Nowra, NSW.

The successful candidate shall be responsible to plan, manage and perform technical, compliance, administrative, research and managerial activities relating to HAZCHEM. Specifically these duties will include:

  • Management of NASPO accounts, registers and processes.
  • Ensuring Safety Data Sheets and HazChem risk assessments are up to date, approved and correctly stored.
  • Requesting Occupational Hygienist assessments for ‘Complex’ risk assessments.
  • Requesting Occupational Hygienist support for any air or heavy metals testing required.
  • Update/review HazChem/Plant management procedures and directives iaw CASsafe, SafetyMan and NASPO requirements.
  • Act as the NASPO point of contact for NASPO HazChem/ChemAlert management issues.
  • Act as the NASPO HazChem Safety Advisor and subject matter expert (SME) and provide advice to internal and external stakeholders on issues related to HazChem management.
  • Conduct HazChem risk assessments in support of NASPO technical and engineering staff. 
  • Provide Quarterly reports to NASPO Supervisor summarising key work activities completed during the quarter.

Experience/Skills Sought:

  • Possess a strong Technical and WHS Acumen with experience in the use and management of HazChem and Material Safety Data Sheets in the workplace.
  • Possess good computer literacy and research skills and have excellent written and verbal communication skills (there is scope for specific on the job training to ensure the team member meets CASG/Defence requirements for management of HazChem).
  • Demonstrated experience managing competing priorities from numerous stakeholders.
